Topic: cannon link

I'm installing a cannon link, The manual does not  say this unit is water resitant or water proof . Can it be mounted in the open? or does it have to be sheltered? Not many options in a open boat. I can seal the unit myself, but is this necessary, suggestions please. Thanks in advance.

It is not sealed and so is not waterproof or splash proof and needs to mounted in a location that will not be subjected to water or spray.

Thanks Greg, any problem if i  seal it with hot glue or epoxy, it will get wet sooner or later. Its still in warranty. come on were going fishing is this what it was meant for, I'm not on a cabin cruiser need a solution.

bab, you could put the piece in a waterproof box and that would protect it.
where the cables go thru the box (which you drill out a hole) you could use rubber washers to seal the hole with the cable..
There are several makers of waterproof boxes and not too costly..

not to be a jerk but i just shelled out a grand for a rigger and control. Head unit is water proof, down rigger is water proof,perhaps its not a cannon link, just a weak link. It might rain to night,. I got  to go take it out of the boat. It's a small boat not a dry spot on it,didn't want to buy another cell phone, I wanted a fishing system. Just for the record i got the cannon link just for the speed and temp probe, its waterproof, right?

Thanks sonar, I can do that, but hot glue is a lot cheeper and more conveniant.  don't want to spoil the warrenty, condensation is a prime concern, no such thing as a waterproof box unless in a vacume or pressurized. For the money I just wish it were plug and play!!!!!!!!!!!

Yep, I know the feeling.  And I agree you would think that building a piece that was going to be out in the weather they would make it waterproof.
would seem simple enough.
dont know about the cannon link and its construction...Maybe some one else that has one can say..

I don’t know if sealing the CannonLink module will harm it or not.  I don’t know if it generates any internal heat while in use but would guess that it did not.

The CannonLink was never designed to be a waterproof device; doing so would have increased the cost.  It was intended to be mounted in an area on the boat that was free of water and spray.  For your boat it sounds like a waterproof box would be the way to go as it would be no different than installing it up under a dash or in an equipment box.

Just how much could it cost to waterproof (for surface not submerged)......

Not all boat have cabins or consoles..
