adding waypoints via home computer
« on: August 07, 2010, 09:45:10 PM »
Is there any software available that allows the 898C SI to add waypoints on your home computer and then download them to the card to upload them to the unit. Like if I have a friend who gives me the gps locations I could add them in my home instead of the boat.

You should register your unit at the HB website and then download Humminbird PC to your computer...

Humminbird PC is the software you need for waypoint management with the HB units...

I do not know if that program will work on a 898.  I remember a thread somewhere that indicated that it did not.  I could be wrong.  HB could have updated the program.

Humminbird PC will work fine with the 898c if you are uploading waypoints via the SD card.  It will not work using the PC Cable and the new 898, 798, or 998!

There are quite a few programs you can use to create waypoints, but with most of them you will have to save the file as a GPX file and then import it in to Humminbird PC.  And then upload to the SD Card to get it to the unit.

Thanks for the help. Worked like a charm. It sure beats sitting in your boat in 103 degrees like we are having down here in Alabama.

I can’t believe you said that!  Here in Alabama it’s not the heat: it’s the humidity!  ;D
Sorry, couldn’t help myself there… must be the heat, err humidity getting to me!  ::)

OK Greg what does 103 degrees and 100% humidity mean?  It means Thank you Humminbird for the PC program that I can work on in 72 degrees in my house!

Got all the Waypoints done on my PC using the Humminbird PC Program but when I save them to the Card and insert the card in the 898C  the points do not transfer. I have checked and they are on the card in the waypoints folder , any advise?

Did you use the upload feature in HumminbirdPC the get the waypoints from HumminbirdPC to the SD card?  This has to happen so that the waypoints get converted to the *.hwr file format that the unit uses.  HumminbirdPC will also make the folders needed for this as well.

Greg,
i finally got it. I looked at my sd card and for some reason even though they showed on humminbird PC they were there , they was not in the .gpx form. So I did the old Copy and Paste from windows explorer and that hit the mark.
They are now in the unit ready for for fishing
thanks eric

I'm only a Newbie with a 898cx SI but I got some great info from one of the guys on the forum for working at home with HB and adding waypoints.
I bought a 240volt / 12volt converter  that has a (cigarette lighter ) female end plug attached then bought a male end plug and joined it to a HB cable, part no. PC 11 which fits into the  HB control head . Turn on the power and you can add your waypoints straight into HB. It works great for learning how to use  HB and  getting your settings right as well. PC 11 cable available from Humminbird for about $28.00 the converter I got from Jaycar for $25.00. Male cigarette plug $5.00 also at Jaycar. We have had some very ordinary weather over here in Australia since I purchased HB which has made it difficult to get out on the water and this setup has helped me become very  used to the operations of my favourite investment...HB. 898.
Enufzed.
