900 Series S.I Comparisons
« on: May 20, 2022, 12:44:19 PM »
Ok, I just read something & looking 4a liitle clarification. I hope I'm not breaking our rules re: "Thread HiJacking" But I felt the need 2post a pic of the words the way they were originally written (pic1of2).
U see, after recently picking up a 2nd hand 180HDSI Transducer, I was thinking I might want 2shop around 4a 900Series S.I unit But would definitely need 2do some comparison(s) 1st. Now I plan 2avoid the 987c seeing as that unit runs onna 160HDSI Transducer & also wish 2avoid CCFL(+TFT) in favour of LED Display Backlighting=HD. Anyway, this individual from pic1 really seems 2know their stuff after reading some articles But i'm wondering IF therez a typo when he speaks of an 1199c as having a "blended/composite form of D.I" when originally answering a query directed moreso towards 1159 D.I. units & how this "composite D.I." applies 2 ALL S.I. Units from 2010 & prior. IF True, does this apply 2all 900 Series S.I. units as well? Furthermore (IF So), would it be Safe 2include this caution up to June, 2011 also? So therez 2 Loaded Questions right off the hop.
My 3rd loaded query applies 2 the internal GPS of the 900 Series S.I units as some of them are labelled as 998c HD w/the Letters "GPS" underneath instead of an "i" beside the "c" where that would read as 999ciHD (pic2of2)?
In what era or year did Hummimbird begin 2make this particular Label Change re: internal GPS? Thanks, Sandro.

Time for some brand history  ... as accurate as I can recall it  ...

2005 - HB came out with the first SI ...

Fall 2009 - Lowrance introduced their SideScan (with added dedicated DownScan)  ...

January 2010 - HB introduced a software update that added DI “views” to the current line of core SI units  ... these DI “views” were a computer generated DI image produced by blending the data from the 2 side pointing SI piezoes  ... in other words HB did not have DI before - and did not introduce a new xducer with a dedicated DI piezoe to allow these core SI units to create DI (to counter Lowrance’s release of a DI technology) so HB just created a computer program to blend data that was already being received by the SI piezoes  ... (not to mention there would have been patent issues that would need to be litigated thru - time consuming = easier to build a software program to get  ... uh  ... DI  ... into current HB SI units)  ...

Summer 2010 - HB introduces DI units (with no SI) that have a dedicated DI piezo (and 2d)  ...

HB continues these core models (SI units with 2d/SI/blended DI and also DI units with 2d/ dedicated DI) until ONIX is released with HB’s 1st xducer that has 2d/SI/dedicated DI  ...

When ONIX was released - HB HELIX (G1) were already in market with the same core models offered as previous core models (SI units with 2d/SI/blended DI and also DI units with 2d/ dedicated DI)  ...

HB HELIX G2N were the 1st “core” unit models that offered SI units with 2d/SI/dedicated DI  ...

HB also continued the core DI units (2d/dedicated DI) to allow a lower cost unit for scenarios when SI was not needed  ...

ONIX progressed thru SOLIX and then APEX with 2d/SI/dedicated DI  ... adding CHIRP and MEGA along the way  ...

HELIX has also added CHIRP and MEGA along the way  ...

Internal GPS antenna in HB units were not offered until the core line of xx9 and xxx9 units  ... thus the “i” in the model name

All previous models required an external GPS antenna  ... no “i” in the model name  ...

Also realize there have been in the past a few of the smaller 5 and 7 inch core models (2d or DI) that had no GPS capability at all  ... (another cost saving offer for users that didn’t need GPS)  ...

I am continually impressed of your knowledge of these products. If HB Greg is reading these, I'm sure he has a big smile on his face. You have filled some mighty big shoes.

Thanks Mike  ... I can attribute a lot to Greg’s patience (and others here) in my questions in the early years  ...

Well, not only did Mr.Rickie help 2educate me (yet again), it got me thinkin about H-Bz history & if their Fishfinders started out as a "flasher-style" or moreso of a "readout-style" & as it turns out - therez an entire History Lesson at Humminbird.com.
I had No idea that Tom Mann didnt know how 2spell "Hummin(g)bird" & that he actually "snail-mailed away $300 4the Legal Name"... even Hank Parker was part of the list of names that helped out... I remember his showz "jingle" clear as day... "Grass Needs Cuttin', House Needs Paintin' - Gone Fishin'..." Anywho, enuff of that as I found it 2 B a very interesting & informative read & even helps 2understand the value of 2dayz 360deg imageing a bit "Mo'Betta" & the pivotal role Bass Pro Champ Kevin Van Damme (KVD) played in recent years so if any1z interested, Herez the link :

I agree that the bass pros contributed to the advancement of the HB product, but don't overlook the fact that many to the original members on this website helped as well. I feel sure that corporate followed this site closely. There is a group form Europe that helped everyone. I think Reef Master was written in Australia. The story goes that HumViewer was written by one of the early members while he was in a hospital bed in one of the European countries. Canada has helped. Instruction manuals have been created from members out west. Knowledge and ideas for improvement have come from everywhere.

Ok so back to comparisons & another loaded question i guess... so if we had an 1198cSI & a 998cSI sitting side by side, would there be any difference(s) other than 2.4 inches of screen size? I also noticed on an 1198cSI (that i might be interested in) as Not having the letters "HD" etched into the "Name Tag Area" & yet the box it came with from March,2012 (as per Serial#) describes it as having an "LED Backlit Display for Good Visibility in Sunlight"... which qualifies as HD or is that another thing that didnt start happening until 2013-14? Now i may have read somewhere that 700 & 1100 Series units have had LED displays since 2011 & that 800 & 900 Series didnt start receiving LED displays until 2013? Another thing 2note is that my 598ciHDSI has a Mfg Date of Oct.2012 (as per Serial#) & is just as per namesake. Talk about a loaded question-eh?
Sorry But i just like 2have my facts straight.
Thanks, Sandro.

I don’t remember the exact date that the “HD” moniker dictating LED display came to be  ... but it was after the xx8 series release and before the xx9 series release  ...

I do know that “HD” will be listed in the model name on the start up splash screen and on the SD Card slot door  ...

If it does not list “HD” it’s the older CCFL backlighting  ...

OK "Splash Screen" - Got it... & as far as comparing a 998cSI 2an 1198cSI - the only difference there is 2.4" (diagonally) of screen size - yes?
Hey, one 1 more thing, if we were to take these comparisons a step further re: 999ciHDSI & 1199ciHDSI; there would be 3 main differences, (as per what I've learned thus far) 1>"i"nternal GPS, (ii)a bit faster processor and (iii) 600x800 pixel resolution would seem a bit "crisper" on an 8"screen vs a 10.4"screen... I've also read something about the 999ci & 1199ci needing an "adaptor" for Ethernet whereas the 998c & 1198c do Not? Does that 4th note Not seem a bit odd when technology is supposed to improve with each succession?
Many Thanks, Sandro.

Correct the only difference in the 998c SI and the 1198c SI is screen size  ...

Pixels per square inch does, in theory dictate that more pixels per square inch should be crisper ...

xx8 series and xxx8 series had the round metal screw type Ethernet connector separate from the cable collector  ...
xx9 series and xxx9 series moved that Ethernet connection inside the cable collector (with an adapter cable) to allow the Ethernet connection to be encompassed into the cable “quick connect” connector  ...
