Title: importing waypoints Helix 5
Post by: midgastumpjumper on March 25, 2015, 09:59:51 PM
Hello, new to the forum and to side imaging.  Picked up a Helix 5 SI.  Long story short I have a mini SD card with waypoints saved on it.  I put the SD card into my helix 5 and turn it on and no waypoints show on the unit.  I have figured out how to mark a waypoint while I'm out on the lake and export it to the SD card but I cannot figure out how to get the ones that were already saved to import into my helix 5 unit.  Any help would be great.  Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the Humminbird Side imaging Forums midgastumpjumper.

Not sure what file format or how you are attempting to do this but you should be doing it through the (free) HumminbirdPC program.  Here is a link to the Humminbird FAQ page that may help:

Thank you.  I am using humminbirdPC and i'm not having any issues with it.  I am able to view my waypoints in google earth and edit them and save them back to my SD card.  The problem I'm having is when i put my SD card into my helix 5 and turn it on the waypoints dont show up automatically.  I'm not sure how to make them show up.  Getting waypoints from humminbirdpc onto my SD card doesnt do me much good if they dont show up on my unit.

Stumpjumper, when you “save them back to my SD card” did you use the “save”, “save as…” or “upload” function in HumminbirdPC?

Look at the file structure on the MicroSD card.  Is there a folder named “MATRIX”?
Within the MATRIX folder is there a file named “DATA.HWR” and if so, what is the file size?

upload, and file size is 1kb for data.hwr

the waypoints are definitely saving to the SD card.  They just dont show up when I put the card in my helix.  The only option in the helix is to "export" waypoints to the SD card.  Dont see any option to import a waypoint from the SD card to the helix, and they dont show up automatically.

Are you highlighting all of the way points in Humminbird PC before you click upload?

Coy, he should be highlighting the file name while in HumminbirdPC not waypoints.

midgastumpjumper, with the SD card installed in your HELIX 5 SI-GPS unit, try making a Screen Snapshot and see if it will show it in the Sonar Recording and Screen Snapshot View.  This will show us that the unit recognizes and can both read and write to the MicroSD card.  If it doesn't, try performing a full (not "quick") format of the MicroSD card and try it again.

Yea.  I even recorded a short video and viewed it in humviewer.  But let's say created a waypoint from the video and saved that to my SD card.  It will not show up on my helix.  I know for a fact I'm saving to the SD card.  No problems there. Just can't get waypoints to show on the helix unless I create the waypoint out on the water

Midgastumpjumper, when you made the Sonar Recording did you view it on your HELIX 5 SI-GPS unit?  I believe that the SDHC cards have separate lines for reading and writing data.  The problem may not be in the HELIX 5 unit writing data to the SDHC card but in reading it from the SDHC memory card.  This is why it is important that you review some data from the SDHC memory card with your HELIX 5 unit.

I don’t know what format HummViewer saves waypoints in, so saving a waypoint made while using HummViewer on a memory card may not work without first using HumminbirdPC to convert it to the correct format.

Just in case anyone else runs into this issue. I had the same problem. The fix is you need to insert the card after the unit is already powered up. It will not prompt you to import the point if the card is in the unit when it powers up. Hope that helps.
