This sonar stuff is all new to me, I just purchased a 597ci HD DI it's mounted on my trolling motor for used from the front of the boat as that is where i fish 90% of the time.

The screen scrolls from right to left, isn't what I'm seeing actually front to back? Or am I missing something here?

I'm not sure I understand what you mean as to front to back.

What you are seeing is based on where your transducer is actually pointed down
into the water.  The deeper the water, the bigger the coverage cone gets.
Right to left is the standard way that 2-D sonar is displayed.

Think of what's on the furthest right side of the screen as new information, and
anything to the left of that as old information.

I understand the cone angle on the deeper the water the more of the bottom you can see.  Maybe I am  over thinking the whole thing.

What I was curious about was what I'm seeing scroll right to left on the screen is that scrolling right to left under the boat or front to back?

Maybe this will help if I saw a large school of fish go across the screen and I wanted to present some bait to that school chances are where would I want to cast my lure to the left side or the rear?

This might help you to visualize how it works.
You have your transducer attached to your trolling motor on the front of the boat.
You lower a jig (on a line) to the bottom.
You raise it off the bottom.
On the right side of your screen, you can see the line and the jig.
The screen information you just saw keeps moving to the left.
It is now old.
You lower and raise your jig again.  You can see this information on the far right of the
screen again.
If you use the RTS(real time sonar) with your 2-d view, you can see what is happening
in real time.  Every time you move that jig, you will immediately see the movement on the RTS section of the screen (very far right).
It will only show fish that pass through the sonar cone.
This will probably include fish towards the back of your boat only if you are in very deep water.
Also, if you 50mhz, it will show a bigger cone.

I think if you use the DI, then you will see a real-time picture view.
It doesn't scroll.

If you see fish on your 2-d sonar, I would lower the bait/lure right below the transducer.

On the Split Screen Sonar View the frequency on the left is the 83kHz.  The lower frequencies are more likely to show surface clutter and zooplankton stronger than the higher 200kHz frequency will.  I would not move the transducer for this.

The DI sonar displays the same as 2D sonar does: newer information on the for right side with older historical data scrolling to the left side.  If you are heading straight forwards with your trolling motor pointed straight forwards; than the fish you see on the display could be well behind the boat.  To see how far away they are just use the cursor and move it over them and the unit will tell you how far away they are.
