Title: back light turns off/depth issues/gps issues/downscan issues
Post by: fishinphil on May 18, 2011, 09:05:30 AM
I have had my 898 c si for about a month i am not happy at all. Everytime i start my motor, the back light goes dark or it completely turns off the unit. When the backlight is off you can barely see and if you press the power key for lighting options it says backlight is at 10. So i have to turn off the unit and then power it back up. I have to do this everytime i crank my motor. Also the depth goes crazy. In water 7 to 10 foot it will jump from 300 foot to 0 and all around.
The gps is way off as well. At my harbor it says the boat is on land. It is roughly 100 feet off. Is there anyway to calibrate this or do i need to just learn to compensate? Also the down scan has thick horizontal lines that cover the screen so i cant even use this option. I would take a pic and post it but i cant get it take a pic or recording. Please help!! What do i need to do about all these issues?

Your problem is that your gas motor is drawing current away from the sonar unit when you crank the gas motor because you probably have your sonar hooked to the same battery as your gas motor.
Also,
You are getting interference from the gas motor.

Get yourself a dedicated battery for the sonar and only run the sonar off of it.
It does not have to be a big battery.

Also, don't run the sonar wires close to the gas motor wires.
That should solve your problems.
