Depth all over in shallow water
« on: February 17, 2011, 12:02:11 AM »
When I am in shallow water (like 6' or less) my depth readings go all over the place. It will read like 15-20' and back down and up again. It changes numbers very quickly. I go back to deeper water and all is fine again.

Any thoughts on this. Maybe I can take a video of it.

Thanks....Bill

Ok, first, check if you have at least the 4.960 update on your unit.
This update was used for this exact problem.

And try using these settings..

Switchfire mode = CLEAR
Surface clutter = 5 to 10  ..   but not below 5
Try locking the range to 0-10ft, it's just one click from "auto"
And last, try using only the 200 kHz beam.

Post back your results..
With these settings, I'm able to show reliable, solid depth reading up to 1.5ft of water.

Bill,

Are you running just 200khz or do you have 83khz turned on also?  May help to have 83khz off.  Bottom composition can also have an affect on shallow depth readings.  Mine goes haywire in soft muddy bottoms, but fine on sandy bottoms.

Switchfire to clear should also help as xSilmarilSx pointed out.

Let us know what happens.

...and also turn off any other sonar units as you may be seeing sonar-to-sonar interference.

I have not seen this with other units...Generally other units affect the both the bottom display on the screen and the depth....  Even in deep water I have not experienced depth problems with other units.  but if this is the case lets verify for future reference.
