Help with transducer mounting on an 17TV Explorer
« on: January 19, 2015, 07:39:15 PM »
I've got a new 798ci Si that's going on a 17' Explorer tunnel V.  The old transducer that was on the boat was mounted in position "A".  It was a Lowrance 480 that worked OK in that location.   I do enough shallow water that I occasionally ground or kick up the transducer, and am concerned about tearing up this new transducer by mounting it in the same location.  Could I mount it right over the tunnel in position  "B"?  This would be a really protected location, but, would there be too much turbulence ? Would the side imaging work with the 2 1/2" drop-down of the hull that would be 12" away from it?  Or, as a last resort, position "C" ?  Any thoughts on this?

Position A is going to be your best scenario ...

The SI beams reach from the water's surface to overlapping directly under the boat ...

Your sponsons will block some of the upper reaches of the Left and Right SI sound pulses ...

For protection of the expensive SI xducer ... Most opt to use the AS SIDB Y cable and a shoot thru XP 9 20  in the bilge for high speed 2d depth readings ...and mount the SI xducer a little higher on the transom for protection against water-borne debris ...

SI imaging works best at idle speeds anyway ...
