898SI C

Have had unit for about a year.  Last time out i lost depth reading on plane.  I have both shoot thru hull and si ducer installed and they have both worked until this last time.  Once i come off of plane i cannot get readings back until i unplug the transducers and plug back in again.

Are you using a Transducer Switch or the AS-Si-DB-Y cable to connect both the inside-the-hull and HDSi transducer to your 898c Si unit?

Try plugging each transducer directly into your 898c Si unit and test again as you described above and let us know the results.

What version of software are you running in your 898c Si unit?

Thanks Greg, using y cable only, no switch.  Recently upgraded to Ver. 6.42, but had problem before and after upgrade, no difference.  Will try connecting directly, had not thought of that.

What you need to look for is whether the unit will start reading the correct bottom reading again after the boat has slowed back down or is stationary in the case of the HDSi transducer (depending on installation: it may only read the correct water depth when drifting).

 - If neither reads correctly after slowing, than the problem may be in the unit itself.
 - If both read correctly after slowing, than the problem is in the AS-Si-DB-Y cable.
 - If the inside-the-hull transducer does not read the water depth correctly after slowing down but the HDSi transducer does, than either the inside-the-hull transducer has deteriorated or the installation of it has.

I did test run this weekend.  Swapped units front to rear and rear to front, same result.  Then ran transducers one by one directly to unit.  Bad through the hull transducer is the result.  Can someone explain using a y cable to use both transducers why does it not swap back to the SI transducer when i come off plane instead of trying to read from the puck.

Because the AS-Si-DB-Y cable is just that: a cable.  It has no internal electronics inside of it except for wires and connectors.  Look at the picture below and it may help you understand that the AS-Si-DB-Y cable simply disconnects the 2D sonar (200kHz/83kHz) portion of the Si transducer and replaces it with the same from the inside-the-hull DualBeam transducer.

What are the benefits from installing a switch vs y cable

The Transducer Switch (TS3) allows you to select which transducer the 2D sonar is coming from.  If the inside-the-hull transducer also has a built-in temperature sensor than you will also be selecting where the Temperature readout is coming from.  The downside of this is that with some transducer combinations, you will also have to change the Transducer Select menu (also called “Connected Transducer” in the latest software versions) setting.  With the XP-9-20 transducers you do not have to worry about this.  The switch also has to be mounted, is more expensive and has to be manually toggled whereas the AS-Si-DB-Y cable is installed and that’s it, plus it is less expensive.
