Help with transducer location for Helix 5 SI
« on: June 24, 2018, 05:10:37 PM »
I have a new Helix 5 SI GPS and am still installing it. I also have a older 987c that is still my main unit.

Here is a photo of my stern:

Here or on the opposite side in the same position as the 987c transducer?

If I mount it on the starboard side on the fair side of the strake I will be at approximately 12 to 13 inches from centerline. I am afraid it might cause ventilation on that side? And I am afraid it will be shadowed by the 987c transducer on the outboard location port side?

My Johnny Ray quick release pad. The Starboard pad is routed out underneath to allow the cables to exit to the forward side so as to conceal the one inch pass through hole and to help weatherproof the install:

I mounted the Helix up top so I can pull it for my kayak (getting an extra transducer) and also to preserve the console space for another upgrade to a 10 inch Solix etc. at some later date.

Any thoughts?

Rickie has experience in multi transducer installs.  He may stop by later today.  I will say what a well thought out and clean install you have done with your boat.  Congrats.

HB 455kHz SI covers from the water's surface to past vertical under the boat on both sides  ...

Any object to the side of a side imaging xducer can create a hard echo line parallel (and close to) the SI image center line  ...

2 separate SI xducers mounted on the transom are the most challenging installs  ...especially with other obstacles on the transom like lower unit, kicker motors, trim tabs, live well screens, other xducers, etc  ...

The Left/Right Y cable with 2 SI xducers connected to 1 of the SI units can sometimes help with these type installs  ...

Thanks. So you are saying I may need another transducer and a Y cable for the new Helix 5 SI? And then mount one port and one starboard and interconnect via the Y cable?

I think I am going to try the starboard location on the inner strake with the 'ducer that came with the unit. And see what happens. I will install the new transducer using a SternSaver glue-on mount.

If I have to add a second transducer then mount it outboard of the existing 987c unit?

My boat is a Boston Whaler Outrage, these BW boats are a challenge in that there really is no traditional bilge or below deck access as it is all filled with foam from stem to stern and keel to gunwale cap. Any holes anywhere are to be avoided, especially below the water line. Yes, there are a few but they have been specially prepared by over drilling and then filling with glass and resin and then re-drilled, a total PITA. The point being that running cables all over is not easy and generally not very esthetically satisfying.

I assume there is no way the 987c SI and Helix 5 SI can share 'ducers?

Testing your possible mounting location is a good start  ... You may or may not get reflections from the other xducers that show up in the SI image  ...

A hard echo line in the SI image (from another xducer) doesn't even bother some users  ... Some it does bother  ...

Correct  ... The M 9 SILR Y cable allows installing 2 SI xducers to 1 head unit  ... Thereby allowing 2d/Right SI and Temp to come from the Starboard mounted SI xducer - and left SI to come from the port mounted SI xducer  ...
