This unit will not display fish or fish arcs in 2D
« on: April 26, 2015, 11:30:08 AM »
PROBLEM - This unit will not display fish or fish arcs in 2D  on any setting…
I have tried 83 only, 200 only and 83/200 combined modes, various sensitivities, fish id on and off, id sensitivities, clear mode and max mode.  I have reset all setting to factory and started adjustments from there several times I do not see arcs and/or fish. The 2D is showing trees and structure on the bottom and shows the thermocline but not arcs or fish.

The DI/SI mode display works correctly and I do see white marks and clouds that I believe are fish and baitfish. (I have also caught many fish close to and under the boat while using this, so I know they are there)   This is the only unit on my boat and the standard GPS is the only accessories.

I have had this issue since the day I bought this.  It sent the unit and transducer back to Hummingbird for service and the returned it to me saying nothing was wrong and they included printouts showing Fish.

Used only in fresh water lakes and rivers less than 40 feet deep, speeds of 5mph or less.

898C HD SI Combo - Transducer XHS-9-HDSI-180-T.
Unit shipped with ver 6.640 and I had the factory reset it and returned with 6.490, due to issues I had read about on this and other forums. That did not help so I am now running the newest Now Version 7.510

This unit is great for finding rocks, trees, terrain, and Man Overboard. Everything but Fish!
Any ideas welcome.

Welcome to the Humminbird Side imaging Forums nascarnhis.

It’s strange that you would be seeing fish in the Si/Di sonar but not in the 2D sonar.  Any chance that you could post a few Screen Snapshots with Side Imaging/Sonar Combo View where the Si is showing fish?

Normally when someone posts about not seeing fish they do not see them in any of the sonar types.  A few of the things we tell them is to do is to check the electrical connections between the power cable of their unit and the battery it is powered from.  No loose or corroded connections, even on the fuse, fuse holder and battery contacts; these will rob the unit of the power that it needs to operate properly.  You should also try cross-testing your unit with someone else that has a non-DI model Humminbird unit as they all use the same 2D sonar.

Just read the April 2015 posting about not displaying fish or fish arcs.
I upgraded to the HD transducer on my 899 in July 2015.
Did not see any improvement in clarity or fish arches.

Will follow advice on cleaning battery terminals and fuse wire.
I fish the Mississippi in Southeastern Minnesota.
Is the muddy water affecting the fish arcs?
What advantage is the NO setting to displaying fish vs fish display option?

Love the 899 - had it since April and learning on every trip to the water.

There would be no difference in the 2d of the upgrade XHS 9 HDSI 180 T with the 899 ...(the 2d piezo is the same as in the stock XNT 9 SI 180 T...the SI piezoes are different) ...

Muddy water shouldn't affect the fish echoes ...

The main attribute of getting fish arches is the fish actually being in the sonar cone long enough to be pinged several times and at different distances from the xducer as it passes thru the sonar cone ...

This is sometimes difficult in shallow water because the sonar cone is just not very wide in shallower water ...
-------
-------

Fish ID will paint fish icons on the 2d view when the unit detects echoes that meet certain criteria that the unit dictates as "fish" ...it can help show the difference in fish and bait or smaller echoes ...

thanks, Rickie.
I am a little disappointed that I added $ 200
for a HD transducer for no improvement.
My 899 is the SI model but maybe I should have
bought the 999?

Seeing the difference in the upgrade XHS 9 HDSI 180 T is most beneficial if one scans the exact same criteria with each frequency in the HD capable (455kHz and 800kHz) units like your 899 ...

Set up a simple boat course over some well defined structure and scan the course with same boat speed/chart speed ...where the only variable is the frequency choice ...

This simple comparison makes it much easier to see the added benefit of the 800kHz frequency capability of the upgrade XHS 9 HDSI 180 T ...

I will give the 455 vs 800 khz test a try.
