Title: 798 does not recognize update on card
Post by: bobalong on May 25, 2014, 04:02:00 AM
I just loaded the latest update for my 798 onto an sd card. The update shows on the card but when I plug it into the unit, the small update screen that is suppose to come up does not. I formatted the card and set defaults before I put the sd card in and let the unit go through its loading sequence before installing the card.

If your 798 has older software ...it may be necessary to insert the SD Card before powering on the unit....

(Inserting the SD Card "after" power up was instituted as a feature update in a newer version update in many of the HB units)...

I think my 787 is the same way, the card needs to be installed BEFORE power up.  Also I could not use a 4 gig card. Had to use a 2 gig and it worked fine.

Thanks for replies, I tried installing the card before power up, still does not work. I will have to pick up a 2 gb card and try that.

One important point is to only have the update on the SD card. No other data. I've used 4 + 8 GB SanDisk cards successfully.

The card was blank, but I put all the mapping on one route, 3 hrs worth. It appears that was not the way to go.

bobalong,
The mapping data (Navigational data: waypoints, routes and tracks) should not be on the same memory card you use when you update the unit, it can be added later.

If your unit has older software and does not recognize larger than 2GB capacity memory cards, than it may not recognize the SDHC type memory cards.  According to the SD Association; most 2GB memory cards should be of the SDHC type but some manufacturers manufactured 2GB SD (SDSC) memory cards.  So I would make sure that the 2GB memory card you use is either a true SD (SDSC) memory card or use a smaller capacity memory card.

Thanks Greg, I am going to pick up a smaller card and try that. I have two units to update, both of them are only 2-3 years old, would this be considered "old".

In electronics a 2 – 3 year old product would be considered “old”.  In software terms though we would have been on the 5.XXX software and this should not cause a problem with reading an SDHC type memory card.

I would guess that manufacturing companies consider the "recession" over and that we have lots of jobs and money these days..chuck

We must - as some of us can afford to retire!
