How to set up AS GPS HS?
« on: April 30, 2013, 08:40:38 AM »
Im looking to see if someone can help me out, please. I recently installed an 858DI on the bow with AS GPS HS and a 998SI at the console with its original gps receiver. Both units linked via ethernet and have 6.610. My console unit is not working properly(not reading any gps unless on the network from the other model) which I am sedning back to humminbird after my tournament. I am able to still use it for now because I just pick up the gps receiver at the bow from the network.

The problem I am having is with boat position on the map. I messed with the heading offset but not sure of the correct procedure to set it up. One minute it shows me running up the river sideways and 5 minutes later it shows me running backwards. Does anyone have a tutorial or instructions on what exactly I am supposed to do? Also, keep in mind Im at the console working off of the bow reciever so will I have to change settings on both units? I imagine I would. I just dont know if the settings will be the same? Any and all help is appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Steve

it sounds like you have your navigation set to north up instead of heads up. you can change it in the navigation or chart menu.

Steve, Set up instructions should have been in the operations manual for the GPS Receiver.  Did you get these with the GPS-HS?

Greg,

Disregard my last post. I was just told by the gentleman who did the install that he gave me the book back with the boxes for the electronics. Suprised he didnt set this up correctly and/or let me know about the book.

Anything specific that you can help me with or make sure of so that I do this correctly?

Not really, I haven’t set one up myself but the manual seems pretty straight forward.

Sounds like you might have something magnetic in the vincinity of the HS? That could give you that effect, "going sideways" in a non-understandable way. Its just a fluxgate so it will get really f-d up if theres a magnetic field around.
Try moving it up and away of anything creating a magnetic field. If your boat is made of steel you might have to put it in a non magnetic mast to get away of the field.

I did not think of that magan.  I attended a class on autopilots yesterday and the guy who put the class on said to always survey the boat before installing any sort of magnetic compass device.  The GPS-HS would be such.  He said to use a handheld compass and watch it to see if the needle changed position as you moved around the mounting location area.  If it did, remove the magnetic material or find another location.
