Importing Waypoints (issues)
« on: June 28, 2012, 12:41:46 PM »
Hello all,

I am new to humminbird and I am a Lowrance convert...

I have exported the data that I have all ready put in by hand on the 597 to the sd card and I see the MATRIX folder when I insert the SDcard in to my PC.

I have been reading up and have used GPSBabel to convert all of my CSV data (comma seperated values) into HWR format.

I have placed the hwr file into the MATRIX folder and inserted the SD card into the unit and powered on, The unit sees the card and starts to import the waypoints and then stops saying that there is not enough memory to import all waypoint data. (or something very similar)

My question is what is going on? How much memory does the unit have, the file I am trying to import is only around 12kb.

could it be that the names of my waypoints are too longs?

just looking for a push in the right direction.

thanks in advance

The problem could be the naming of the waypoints Brenardo or it could be something else.  I would go back and check and try a couple of things:

Check and see what software version you are running on your 597 unit.
Is this a 597ci,  597ci HD or 597ci HD DI model?

Try converting the CSV data into the GPX format.  Open that GPX file using HumminbirdPC and than try uploading that data to the SD card and installing that into your 597 unit.

I was just reading over a few older posts on this site and I believe that the names of my waypoints is probably this issue.

And honestly I know this will sound stupid but the unit was on a boat that I just purchased and I am not sure about the exact model.

Is Humminbird PC required to transfer waypoint data? If so would you mind posting a link.

On the SD Card slot cover is is listed 597 CI HD with the words down imaging underneath. I am unsure at this moment as to what software version is on the unit but if it is out of data must you update in order or can you just update to the latest?

When I get home from work I will be more apt to be able to help get this info on the unit and I also need to register the unit with humminbird.com

Brenardo:
Here is the link on this site to the Humminbird Pc software:
http://forums.sideimagingsoft.com/index.php?topic=95.0

The newest version that I see available from the Humminbird website
is version 4.3.3 (4/26/12), but since your unit came on a boat,
then you probably don't have a Humminbird account.

Humminbird PC will validate (check if they are valid) your waypoints.  It's something you
probably will want to use.

Just curious, you say you are an Ex Lowrance user?
Would you mind telling us why you came over to Humminbird?
Thanks.

Well to be perfectly honest...

It was not really intentional, the boat had a nearly brand new 597 on it.

I was originally talking to the guy about keeping his electronics and giving me a better price on the boat but after a few test runs with the humminbird I decided it was something that I could not live without after seeing it function.

controls were a little confusing at first but after a few minutes of playing around I was able to pick up many of the basic functions and even some of the more indepth controls.

I have been extremely pleased in my short time with the boat and unit.

Just having trouble getting my waypoints transfered! : )

Brenardo,
When you register your unit on the Humminbird web site it will list the current version of software available for your 597ci HD DI model unit (version 5.820) along with the current HumminbirdPC program (4.3.3) as well.  ITG is right: you will want to run your converted waypoints through HumminbirdPC.

I just ran my waypoints thru a version of humminbirdpc that I downloaded from here and I get an error:

cvc-elt.1: cannot find the decleration of element gpx

if I proceed anyway I get this : MYfile is not a valid GPX file If you open it unwanted things might happen DO you still want to open it?

When I open it all looks well.

then when I try to upload to the sd card it states that there are too many points max 750

It should be able to pick out the model number from the serial number you enter (don’t forget the dash in the serial number when you enter it).  It’s a 597ci HD DI model from your description though.

I’ve heard of that issue before and cannot remember for certain what is going on… it may have to do with the GPSBabel settngs.

Do you have the Lowrance waypoints file (ends with USR)?  You could try to open that with HumminbirdPC and convert them that way.

THE USR file is not being recognized by humminbirdpc... :(

edit: I am 95% sure that I have got this whooped! Only problem now is that I am at work AGAIN and cannot verify that all is well.

I love a challenge but hate having to wait to see if I get a reward!

The Humminbird software is not very intuitive for beginners IMHO... but once you start to understand the layout it really is a pretty well put together tool.

also should the file on the SD after importing be labeled DATA.HWR??

Yes, when HumminbirdPC uploads the Nav Data to the SD card it will appear in a folder called “MATRIX” and will be named DATA.HWR.

What was the solution to the problem of opening the *.USR file?

OK I have finally got the waypoints in the 597!

The issue I was having with HumminbirdPC was my lack of familiarity.

The problem with getting it to recognize the. USR file was a simple one, the drop down menu that allowed you to select which type of file to upload.

Thanks Greg and ITG!
