No Printed Manuals With New HB Units
« on: March 24, 2010, 12:46:03 PM »
I was blown away when I discovered that the new HB units users manual is on CD.  For 1 or 2 Thousand Bucks, you would think they could at least print a manual so we have something to throw in the boat.  Wow!

Any of you on this forum know if the manual which I guess will be in PDF format, would be able to be added to a portable media device as a text or an image format?  That would help somewhat.

Thanks all.

First off what unit do you have?  This is the first I have heard of HB charging for product manuals, are you sure?

You can find the manuals on this site under "Humminbird Product Manuals" or on HB's site at:  http://www.humminbird.com/support/FAQ.aspx?faqid=72

You can do a search for Humminbird Product Manuals.

In reply to George:  I have on order the new 898c.  I was told that the manual was on CD and not a "Hard Copy".  That information could be wrong,  I hope so.  I did not say they "charge" for a manual, I said I heard it was on CD, not a "print copy".  Also, I do have a PDF copy of the manual that I downloaded from the HB website.  Thanks

Be thankful the manual was not embedded into the unit and having to access it via the menu.  (Oops, I shouldn't have given them any ideas.)  :)

Thanks for the information, I guess HB is going the way of a lot of suppliers issuing cd instead of hard copies it is a lot cheaper.  Although I have a hard copy for my 1197 I use the downloaded pdf more often.

Deltaden,
I just tried saving the new 800 – 900 series operations manual as jpeg images using Adobe Acrobat   standard edition 7.0 and it would not let me.  They have locked the pdf file from editing (not sure why they would do this).  So I’m guessing that you would not be able to save or convert it as an image format.  I will pass along the suggestion of having it in other formats on the CD since there should be lots of room left on the CD.

Operations manuals on CD are something new we are trying out with the new 800 and 900 series units.  If you do not like it or just want that printed copy than I would suggest that you call the Humminbird Customer Resource folks at 1-800-633-1468 and tell them so that we have a record that our bosses (you the Customer) want an actual printed manual in the box with your new unit.  We actually look at the data that is generated from all the phone calls we receive so your call/vote does count!

I understand the reason that the file is "locked' but it would be nice if we could copy pages out of the document and put in a book of our choice. This way we could have a small reference book with only those things we want. The manuals are full of a lot of information but on the lake we only need just a few pages or so.  I will call CS and "vote"  .... thanks Greg.      Chuck

Thanks to Greg and all responses on this thread.  I did not mean to stir up a "bees nest", but I just wanted to mention that I would prefer to have something "In The Boat" with the unit so while I'm soaking a worm I could really get to know my way around the HB.  This is a great forum with many knowledgeable members.
Have a great Spring fishing season.

If anyone has an interest in converting your HB manual from PDF Format to JPG Format, I found a Free "Online File Conversion" website:  zamzar.com Just enter the location of the PDF file on your PC, pick the format to convert it to, add your e-mail address and after the upload to their conversion process, they will mail you a link to download the newly converted file to your PC.  I tried it and it took about 5 minutes for the 898 Manual.  It comes back to you in a ZIP file that you can pick individual pages or the whole manual (160 Pages for the 898).  The file size was about 60 MB.  I have not tried the following yet, but you should be able to put individual pages (or the whole manual) on a portable media device like an Iriver or Creative, etc.
Or -  Just thinking outloud -  Can a jpg file be added to the HD Card on the Humminbird Unit and be viewed on the screen?  Probably not.  I'm still new to this device and awaiting shipment of my 898.  Thanks

My 898SI came yesterday, cracked it open, and no paper manual, just the disk.  I picked up the phone and called Humminbird, the nice lady on the other end said she would send one out, this was at 10:30 in the morning.  By noon I had a order confirmation, and by 5:00 I had a shipping confirmation.  No charges for the manual or shipping................good people.  She said they are "betwixed and between" on this matter, some want the disk, and some want the paper.  I guess Iam old school and I like the paper, it is also easier to have in the boat. :)

Alumabass,
Hope you won’t be disappointed but that may end up being a copy machine print out of the electronic file.

The transducer template is also on the disk?

If so, folks may want to be careful how they print the manual.  If you decide to save the trees and print two pages to a sheet, you may mess up the dimensions of the template.

I did some checking at Staples and they have several hand devices that you can put pdf or other documents on and see them.  I have asked the manager to write me a piece on these devices and their capabilities so we can post here.    chuck

No you won't be disappointed, but if you have any questions as you go along, the folks here are quick to help.

The next thing you need to download is Humviewer so that you can download your recordings and view them on your computer, you will be surprised on what you will see on your computer.

I just picked up the 998c si last weekend at Cabela's and it had the printed manual in it. I plan on getting it wet today, but so far the unit is awesome.  ;D

Interesting... that's -  two people that have said there was a printed manual in the box with their new 800 - 900 series unit.  Yet we were told that there was only the CD that was being packed with the unit and I have checked the packing document on at least one of these and it shows the CD only (plus other literature but not a manual) and I went out to the packing line and saw that they were only packing the CD on Friday... I gotta' check into this some more.
