First few days with my 598
« on: September 01, 2014, 04:32:05 PM »
Hi All,
I am new to this forum so just wanted to introduce myself and make my first post. I am from the UK and live on the North Norfolk coast, in fact only a few metres from the beach. I fish off of a Hobie Adventure Island and have had Humminbird fish finders since 2009. This is my first side imaging unit though and is quite a revelation.

I installed the unit at the weekend and couldn't wait to get out and try it on the water. It has proved very simple to use since I have been used to the general Humminbird layout.

I have been going over some of my local marks and am amazed at how different hey actually are to how I imagined them to be from 2D sonar.

Most of the sea bed here is very sandy or soft mud and so structure really stands out when you find it. I have attached a picture of a surprise I had when travelling over a very close in area where I have caught quite a few bass from the shore.

No wonder this has been a good spot as either side is just flat sand.

Anyway this is a great forum and I have already learnt a great deal from many posts.

Regards,

Pete

Welcome Pete...

I'm curious...

Is the image you posted from a 3rd party viewer..??
(It doesn't look like a screenshot from the unit)...

The structure looks like barrels or sewer pipes ...

We are looking forward to share in more of yor discoveries...

We like pix...

Hi Rickie,

Yes the image was just a screen capture from Hummviewer, as I didn't take a snapshot when I was out on the water. I will have to get in the habit of doing that.
It is fascinating to find discoveries of areas that you thought you knew well. I am still blown away by the image quality of such a reasonably priced sonar unit. I do feel pretty lucky that I am probably one of the first people to use SI sonar of this piece of coast. We live in amazing times!

Regards,

Pete

You already have a recording saved (that you used in Humviewer)...

You can also play that recording back in the HB unit...and take screenshots as the recording is playing...(you must turn on Screenshot under the Accessories tab in the main menu)...

It would be interesting to see a unit screenshot of this same area that you captured in the Humviewer snapshot...

During the recording playback...freeze the HB unit screen scroll with the 4way cursor and play with different settings and palletes before you press the "Mark" button to save the unit screenshot ...

Unit screenshots are saved directly to the SD Card in the Matrix folder...

Inside this Matrix folder will be a .PNG and an associated .dat file with each screenshot saved...

The .PNG can be viewed with most any PC picture viewing tool...(I like Paint because I can add emphasis text {and erase the GPS coordinates} in the picture for teaching and learning)...
