GPS Altitude accuracy
« on: March 31, 2017, 11:02:11 PM »
One of the blocks of information in the "GPS Diagnostic View" is Altitude.  Any thoughts on its accuracy for monitoring water level fluctuations when recording on a reservoir at different times throughout the year?  Water level is not monitored and several launches are used.

Interesting Mike ... I've never even thought about it ...

I will make a note to check it with my lake's water level ...

Of the three axis altitude has the highest degree of error. General consumer gps is not really accurate enough to account for water level changes, you'd need to step up to a survey type grade gps with rtk.

With a standard consumer gps your altitude error is in the range of plus minus 10-50 ft. Good for an idea but not really for water level corrections.

Thank you for taking the time to post this.  I was afraid that was to good to be true.  Now I have to go around the lake and mark seven different launches.
