Title: GPS Puck Location 997
Post by: capttim on October 13, 2009, 09:23:16 PM
Just installing my new 997

I have a question about the GPS Puck. With my old Lowrance X-15 I had the GPS Puck mounted on the dash within 12 to 18 inches of the Head unit. And it was never an issue always worked good.

Can I do this with the Humminbird, that is mount the GPS Puck on the dash within 12 to 18 inches of the head unit.

I have found the HB gps much more responsive than my Lowrance. However temporarily keep it in place with double face tape to find the best location. Bob

capttim,

It should be no problem with it mounted close to the head unit as long as you do not have any metal structure interfring with the view of the satelites.  Bob also had a great suggestion to use double sided tape to temporarily mount the puck until you find the best location.

Good Luck,

Robert

You can mount it on top of the unit if you want (don’t laugh as I know someone who does this with Velcro) and there should be no interference issues.  However, if you are going to be marking waypoints using the 2D or Si sonar than I will implore you to mount the GPS puck as close to the transducer as possible.  This will make those waypoints be a little more accurate and a little easier to find when you want to find them again.

Double-sided tape works very well.  On one of the test boats here I used some 3M brand VHB tape to mount the GPS pucks, the unit mounts (500 and 700 series units only) and even a few of the transducers.  Problem was when we sold the boat I had a hard time removing everything!  ;D
