898c hd si no temp.
« on: March 13, 2014, 07:07:49 PM »
I have no temperature read out option for 2 different graphs.  I have 2 898 units.  I got a new boat and installed a unit that I had off my old boat on my new boat.  In the process I bent a pin on the transducer cable..  So, I replaced the transducer and all was well.  Everything working properly.  I decided after a few trips to update my firmware on both units.  After I did this I lost my temperature readout on both units using 2 separate transducers.  I know how to select readouts and all that.  So I went into the system status screen and it's saying the temperature sensor is unconnected.  Now, I find it a little odd that the temp sensor went out on both units at the same time after I updated the firmware.  This even occurred last year sometime and I posted on some other forums on some possible solutions but nothing has really worked.  I also tried downgrading the firmware to an older version.  Could anyone give me any type of insight on what could have caused this coincidence or if I may be missing something?  I'm guessing my only option is to purchase a separate temperature sensor.  It's not an expensive deal but a frustrating one especially with a new unit and a new transducer.  Plus I don't know how to go about getting temp on my unit up front without linking the 2 together.

Now, that is really odd.......Did you reset defaults before and after doing the updates?

yes, I did.  On both units.  I had upgrade the firmware on the older unit before with no problems.  It really does baffle me.

Is it possible the units were swapped in troubleshooting with the bent pin transducer and it shorted something out in the units? Bob

You can always take one of them back to the old release and see what you get.

Actually now that I think about it the pin wasn't actually bent.  It was broken off.  And i have tried an older release.  Still the same.  I'm guess a seperate temp sensor is going to be my best (cheapest) route.  I don't really want to shell out the dough for a new transducer again because of temperature.

Instead of a temp sensor I would get a speed and temp.
In fact I did get a speed and temp for my units, because paddle wheel speed is different from GPS speed due to current and wind.So I find paddle wheel speed useful for trolling.

Are you forcing the unit into "Normal" operating mode upon power up ...?? (Or letting the unit boot itself up after pressing the power button to start the unit...??)

I think the unit "tics" the temp sensor upon startup to detect if a xducer is attached...then if the unit doesn't detect a temp sensor - the unit starts up in Demo mode...(if no other buttons are pressed)...

If the unit is possibly starting itself into either of the Simulator modes ... The unit will not show temp as Connected...and there will be no readout options for temp in the Readout menu choices...

Try forcing the unit into "Normal" by pressing the "Menu" button when the welcome splash screen shows...then select "Normal" , then right cursor (to activate), then press "Exit" (to initiate)...

Then try wiggling the cable at the back of the head unit to see if the unit will show the temp as Connected..

I haven't tried this but I will go check it out real quick to see if it works.

No luck with forcing the unit into normal startup

There are 2 units and 2 xducers and neither unit is showing temp...??

Are the units Networked together...??

Is either (or both) units connected to AS SIDB Y cable in order to get 2d from a dual beam xducer...??

Did you try reverting to older software on both units...??

Sorry for all the questions...just trying to eliminate possible variables ...

Units are not networked or.  No y cable involved in anything.  Tried reverting to older software on both units.

It's odd that the temp probe in both xducers would go out ...but who knows...

Do you have access to another HB xducer to test the temp channel in the unit...?? (It doesn't matter which model xducer as long as it has a temp probe in it...)...

If you are going to test with any xducer other than the stock xducer...I would 1st force the unit into the Simulator mode and change the "Transducer Select" menu under the Sonar tab to "Dual Beam"...this will shut off the SI transmitters in the unit...

Then power off the unit...connect the test xducer...re-power the unit on and watch the screen...

As soon as the unit boots...the unit will "tic" a signal to the temp probe to see if there is a xducer attached...

*If the unit detects a working temp probe...it will boot itself into "Normal"operating mode...
*If the unit does not detect a working temp probe...you will see a popup window that says "Transducer not detected"...and then the unit will boot into the "Demo Simulator" mode...

If you don't have access to another HB xducer...time to call HB...1-800-633-1468 ...

I had a similar problem with mine,

tried 2 different brand new transducers and could not get temp to work.
Tried everything you did and could think of.

Bit the bullet and just bought the temp sensor, worked.
