Extention cable length
« on: June 16, 2010, 05:48:11 PM »
HB wont release the extension cable mfg that they use.  So I am wondering if any of you know where thre extension cables are made and by whom.  I would like to have a short extension cable made.   10 to 14 inches.  Would also be nice to know if a short extension cable could be plugged in without the transducer attached and not have it fry the transmitter as is possible if you do that with the long 10 footer.   If the unit can power up in demo mode with out the transducer....... wondering what the cable length of an extender would be so as to not damage the unit.

Also you guys that make a longer cables for your tow fish.....what connectors are you using?

After some discussion with Robert I decided to use the Cat6 connectors.  althought I prefer the ethernet connector for our purpose it may be easier to use the cat6.

Well how time flies.  I stopped by an electronic manufacturer business this morning and they said bring us the cable and we will make you the connection.   I did and 1/2 hour later it was a done deal.  They even made a mounting connector for the box that the sonar unit is in. Now I can unplug the transducer easily.  The short jumnper connector is 12 inches long.  I guess until someone tells me otherwise I will treat the 12 inch like the 10 foot and not have the unit on without the transducer.
Total cost including labor    USD  $28.00

They are a fortune 500 business.  They build and ship worldwide.  The guys and girls are very nice and helpfull.  They said any thing we need to let them know.  this is all in house so no outside vendors to wait on.  Most of what they make are cat5 cat6 ethernet or data cables.  What they did for us was great and it works.
Normally they dont sell to the public but I am sure if I ask they will build.  The factory supervisor said to call him with any more needs.    The girls who solder the connectors let me watch while they worked.  Very nice people.
Let me know the needs and I can ask.

Rzorback........The company does not have the connectors that HB uses so I bought the 10 foot extension and they cutoff each end of the 10 foot and put the connector between the two ends. This way they dont have to worry about the pinout of the HB cable.  It is a one on one direct connection.
