new boat electronics
« on: January 07, 2013, 12:25:20 AM »
Hi all
I hope all of you had a great holiday season!

I am looking at buying a 2011 Nitro Z7 that has an 1198 at the drivers position and a 958 at the bow.

I don't know if they are networked or if they can be networked. I was hoping I could get some info on these units. I have an i-pilot terrova that I will put on this and I wonder if these units can support Link capabilities if I upgrade the terrova to i-pilot link?

Thanks for any assistance you can give me...

The fact that both unit numbers end with an 8 is extremely good.
They are the latest and greatest models.

I'd call Humminbird customer service and ask them your specifics.

Yes the 1198 and 958 units can be networked via an Ethernet connection.
Yes they will be able to be used with the iPilot iLink with a software upgrade.

HB Greg
Is there such a thing as side scan with humminbird? I have a boat place telling me the the 958 has side scan ( I thought HB terminology is Side Image)
Just wanted to confirm. I have heard from a very good source that no 958 has side imaging or side scan.

Thanks

Basically they are the same only they cant use the same name for fear of stepping on someones elses name..
However there is a difference in the way they operate..and display data..

einsteins,
No the 958 units do not have Side Imaging sonar.

For the “side scan” part:
They could be meaning the Side Imaging sonar that we use like Chuck stated.
They could also me referring to the “sidescan” word that we use in our “Connected Transducer” menu (called “Transducer Select” in older software).
They could also be referring to the sideways pointing beam of the WideSide transducer.

Remember also that sidescan usually is an accepted term for a tow fish operation. side imaging is a term ofr a surface mounted transducer with a very large field of view.
AHense some of the issues with the homemade towfisg display using the surface transducer. for some who are good at construction it works (towfish) for others it is a disaster..
