FIXED - 998 and Terrova interference photo
« on: May 27, 2013, 10:37:06 AM »
This is what it looks like!  the bottom 2/4 of the photo shows with the TM on .  the upper part that is dark is a section when I turn the TM off.

I originally had the Power drive TM and added the add on I-Pilot link kit.  The kit came with a ring which I installed and that virtually eliminated all interference.

To further reduce the possibility of interference I moved the TM battery to the bow and added it's own single bank charger.  The TM and battery are totally isolated from the rest of electronics with the exception of the network cable.  The network cable is the ONLY thing connecting the TM to the control units.  Even the potential of induction driven interference has been eliminated.

So I replaced the Power Drive TM for the Terrova (for a number of reasons) and purchased the Terrova New with the I-Pilot Link pre installed.  I perhaps incorrectly assumed that it has all of the interference devices installed.  Perhaps not.  At least I hope it doesn't as then I would have hope of an easy fix.  You can plainly see that as it is now the Sonar is worthless while running this TM.  I will call MinnKota tomorrow early and keep this thread updated.

Well, kind of fixed.  I took the choke off of the old Power Drive TM and installed it on the Terrova TM.  NO CHANGE!

Refer to my first post... the ONLY other thing that was not isolated was the network cable.  Since I have the TM networked for the I-Pilot Link I decided to disconnect the network cable at the TM.  Eureka !  The interference from the TM is gone !  And so is my link to the TM/control unit via I-pilot.  I can still use the TM I-Pilot remote to control the TM for everything other than waypoint work LIKE GOTO!!!!.  I am not sure but it may not anchor to a point either as I believe it uses the GPS from the Controller.

this is not ideal but it is a work around until they figure it out.

I am sure this has been brought up before and HB knows about it but I had to go through the motions to see if my configuration was unique in any way to cause this.  I don't think so.  Seems to me there was a post describing this very thing.

BTW, disconnecting power to the network switch didn't help.  It is apparently the physical connection.

Hope this helps someone.

Great troubleshooting.

HMMMM.....Makes me wonder about the ethernet cable itself.  Is the ethernet cable from the trolling motor to the hub a standard ethernet cable or a special cable?  With a standard ethernet cable.....if you put the ends on yourself, it matters what wire colors are used because of the nature of the twisting internally in the cable.   If the correct wires are twisted together, the twisting reduces interference.  If the wrong wires are twisted together, interference can be introduced.

It is listed as a proprietary connector.  I am sure there are more details on this forum .

Is it the same ethernet cable the main unit uses?  I saw a thread on here with a custom made version that used a standard ethernet cable.

Hopefully Humminbird will be able to help you out.

Have you tried putting some chokes on the ethernet cable?
