898 si problems
« on: June 16, 2013, 11:10:56 PM »
We were away on a fishing trip my brother had a couple issues with his 898 as in the unit would once in a while read incorect depth  2 to 3 ft when the water was clearly over 15. this happened several times and cleared it self each time.
We checked  the transducers and found nothing on them as far as debrise not sure what to think.
The next issue the gps once in a while moved the routes off the original line which we could tell due to the fact parts of the routes were in narrow channels.
We would also like to know if there are any dvd's or videoes on how to utilize all the options on this model.

You stated: “We checked  the transducers and found nothing on them as far as debrise not sure what to think.”
Is he using more than one transducer with his 898 unit?
If so, how are they connected?
Was there another sonar unit running at the same time?

I have not heard of this before with the routes.  Are you sure that these were routes and not tracks?  Routes are made from waypoints being joined together (sort of like dot-to-dot) where a track is where the boat has been.

I would watch the videos that Doug Vahrenberg posted on his YouTube account.

Sorry meant tracks and no other fish finders were in use. This one has both side imaging and high speed transducers installed.
They are hooked up as directed right into the back of the unit with the y cable I beleive.

I haven’t heard this with Tracks either.  Not sure what could cause that either.  Was it that the track now took you through a narrow channel or that the map was now showing them through a narrow channel?

Have him try connecting the high-speed transducer to his 898 unit without the y-cable and see if it is still happening.  If there was a lot of surface clutter present he may have to turn up the Surface Clutter menu.
