Title: Transducer rooster tail
Post by: crappiefarmer on March 20, 2012, 12:22:00 AM
Hello Guys. I'm new to the forum. Just recently bought and installed a 798 ci si and mounted the transducer on the transom of My bass boat. Everything worked pretty good except the rooster tail that the ducer is kicking up is hosing down my motor and could be a problem with it blowing water into my air intake  on right turns. I can't raise the ducer anymore because My jackplate will block the port side viewing. It is already messing with that side some. I will have to shave off a little of the plate to get a better shot for the ducer.

I have heard that some folks are making shields to knock down the spray when it is causing an issue like I am having. I would love any pics or descriptions that any of You have of Your shields or shields You have seen. My boat is a fiberglass Stratos bass boat. I have the ducer mounted directly on the transom, not on a piece of starboard. I can't set the transducer back anymore or the jackplate will become a bigger issue as it goes down pretty close to the bottom of the hull. I am working a fine line and looks like the shield will be my only option to get full performance of the unit and knock down the spray before it ruins my motor. Thanks for any help.CF

CF,
Make sure that you installed the plug in the transducer for this.  There should have been a black rectangular shaped piece of material that installs in the open area between the transducer and the pivot arm of the mounting hardware.

I have heard from several folks who almost threw the plug away as it was not very appearent that it was a part of the install pieces.

If you cant find it call HB support and say the part was not in the box. Since this is a new unit..

Thanks for the pics Greg
i kept all the parts leftover from instalation, still have original box and  i definatly dont have anything that looks like that.
Getting one to OZ could be more trouble that its worth, anybody had sucess with it?

Just wrap black electrical tape around and around the bracket and then put a tie stap to keep the tape from unwinding.  Did this 3 seasons ago and my boat stays in water for 6 months of the year.  Have not needed to touch it sense first doing it.

Now that is a good idea.  I would guess the silicone is a waterproof type and also not an adhesive

Do they make a plug for the 999ci SI.  I noticed when I lowered my transducer to get better reading it throws up water on the outboard?  If so how or who do i need to call?

I have seen some fabricate a deflector shield mounted above the xducer to keep the water spray from hitting the motor...

See photos - this is my attempt at taming the transducer spray.  It is a 1/4" piece of aluminum checker plate screwed to to the transducer mounting board.
However, I was having some issues with erratic depth readings and took it off to see if the issue cleared up.  I've run the boat with the plate off and the erratic depth readings seemed to disappear.  So, I'm going to put the plate back on and see if the depth reading issue returns.   I thought of using a plastic plate, thinking that the aluminum might somehow be interfering with the transducer signal.
