778c update issue
« on: April 03, 2015, 12:23:29 PM »
Hey all, a little background first. I have a 997c SI at my console and a 778c at the bow.  I recently bought an Interlink to network them together.  After setting up I found that the 778c needed to be updated to run the same firmware version as the 997c in order to work correctly.  So I bought the AS PC2 serial cable, and downloaded the latest software to perform the task.

I followed the exact instructions as they lay out in the manual, but when I pressed the Next button to initiate the Update a progress bar showed up on the HumminbirdPC window but did not move.  The unit went black except for two separate vertical lines of text coming from the top of the screen to about 1/4 way down the screen that were too small to be legible.  I left it for quite a while because I thought it might take a bit, but eventually had to cancel as it had obviously failed.  Now when I turn the unit on, the screen comes on and the backlight sweeps across the screen and then goes dark with numerous blue vertical lines and stays like that until I unplug it.  I have tried to hold the View button and start up to bootstrap mode but no luck.

Any ideas?  Did I do something wrong?  What should my next course of action be?

Thanks

It’s hard to say if you did something wrong or not.  Usually when something like this happens it is a momentary power interruption (too fast for the unit to shut down but long enough to cause a problem) or the software update file got corrupted.  Either way you will have to contact the Humminbird Customer Service folks about getting your unit in to be reprogrammed.  1-800-633-1468

Ok thanks.
That's pretty weird though. I used 8 brand new batteries and followed the instructions exactly.  To me that says that there is a flaw in the program or in the design of the update system.  I hope they don't expect me to pay for them to reprogram when it worked perfectly fine before and all I did was follow their directions.  I think I deserve at least one freebie service after buying 3 fish finders, an interlink and a PC cable.

Well I talked to Humminbird and they put me in touch with service centers in Canada.  I called them up and apparently he cannot do anything to it other than to replace the internal chipset/board because it doesn't have a bootstrap menu or anything to do recovery on.
He said it would cost about $200 to replace which really makes me mad.  I just bought a $200 interlink system + $35 for a serial cable to do the update, just to have an update brick my unit.  Almost every other company who makes electronics can make safe upgrades, or at least built in recoveries into their products, the fact that HB hasn't done this makes them fundamentally flawed.  If you can't make your products safe to update (or won't give warranty when it fails) then you shouldn't be making updates an option available to the public.

I don't really have much for options now.  Fix it so my other purchases were not in vain.  Or sell my interlink and go back to the 570 I replaced the 778c with.

Hell, maybe I should just sell the whole outfit and switch to lowrance.  I don't know, but I will be calling Humminbird and filing a formal complaint.
