best settings for trolling
« on: July 21, 2015, 02:31:21 PM »
Wondering what settings people are using while trolling for walleye. I can not dial in my 999 to see my bottom bouncers behind the boat. any advice would be appreciated.

How far behind the boat are you running the bouncers ...  what is the water depth.....I assume you are trying to see them on 2D.

My guess, without more info is that the bottom bouncers are going to be running too far back to be in the 2D beam.....you are going to have the best chance running the 83Khz 2d which is going to have the widest cone angle.

Bob you are probably right about the bouncers being out of the con angle. I will give the 83khz a try. If this doesn't work is there another type of transducer or model that is designed for this.

Not really .... The transom 360 might work for you, but I haven't seen anyone using it for that type of application .......Or you could get creative and try to point a 2D transducer backwards at an angle.

Please Brian, call me a mul!$p&¢!e$ m0fo! lol!   >:D
I fish a lot more shallow than I do deep and when deep I am usually vertically jigging so I am not looking for bouncers.
The only other option to try beside tilting the XDCR further back, which can and will affect sonar returns & the ability to keep the digital locked on plane is to try a 200/50 KHz XDCR and an SI splitter Y cable.

I usually troll with bottom bouncers on side boards but have never tried looking for them on the graph.  I use the 360 when trolling to spot drop offs and channels of to the side so I can run my bouncers near the edge. I usually run the lines maybe 30 feet behind the bouncers.

I use the 999 SI to fish bottom bouncers in 2d on Lake Erie . I had my best results this summer Useing this method . 50fow I attach line with 10 or 12 ft behind cannonball . Yes I use a downrigger to get my line down . I set ball at 40ft . Downrigger is mounted at front of boat . This places my bait and bottom bouncer rig right in the sonar under the boat . It works great I'm able to watch the fish react immediately to the bait .
I found Useing a 10 ft jet diver behind the ball worked just as good if not better then a bb.

Hi shonnr. That thread is from last summer, but since you revived it. What do you do when you see that on your sonar? I use riggers when the fish are 40' or deeper. I have my riggers in the back so I can only see my weights(using 83khz) but can also see the depth the fish are at. I have to wait for the rod to bend before I know I have a hit. Do you get more hookups, Do you set the hook or reel up the slack? Bob

I get to see the cannonball the jet diver and the lure . While fishing a school of eyes in 55ft I could see the fish rise up check out the cannonball and the lure . Almost immediately . When a fish was that aggressive he usually bit . It helped me greatly to be able to see exactly where the lure was running in relation to the bottom . I run mustard hooks .
Setting the hook with these is not really neccasary as I'm usually trolling .
