Faulty zoom button 898c
« on: May 07, 2012, 07:28:02 AM »
I have a 898c and the zoom out button has stopped working. The button physically still feels fine (i.e. it's movement doesn't seem jammed by dirt), but the unit does not give the feedback beep and obviously does not zoom out. It started to give trouble intermittently a few weeks back, but now it has stopped working altogether. It seems like just a poor connection on the button which has now failed completely. My question is, has anyone else had this problem and is there any solution that does not involve sending it back to HB? I am in the middle of Africa and sending it back to the dealer is a bit of a mission. Has anyone ever opened the case on one of these units and if so how, and can you get to the contact pad for the switch at all?

The only thing I can think of, is that maybe the zoom-in
button is stuck which won't allow the zoom-out button
to function properly.

I would take a plastic toothpick (don't use wood - it might break off), and place it in the gap around the outside of the buttons and thoroughly go completely around them.

I had some debris once in my power button that drove me nuts.

Good Luck.

Unless you are really stuck out in the boonie I would not consider taking the unit apart. It will void any warranty. And if you do be very careful in putting it back together. Some of the components are not accessable even with the cover off..

Hi, Thanks for the suggestion but don't think this is the problem as the zoom in button still works (beeps every time your press it) . I have tried cleaning the buttons a few times but it does not seem to have made a difference. My unit is now fully zoomed in (overzoomed) and I can't get it back out. Is there some sort of system reset I could try... perhaps it is a software glitch?

I do agree with you , but the logistics of getting it back to a dealer are quite considerable as there is no-one in Zimbabwe (to the best of my knowledge). The unit was imported from the US when I bought it so I would probably have to send it all the way back there to get it repaired... probably cost as much as just buying a new unit!

If I do bite the bullet and decide to open it are there any issues I should be aware of... these units aren't positive pressurized with nitrogen or something strange like that, are they? Are there any "how to" guides around? I am an electronics tech by trade, though long lapsed into admin work, so I do have some residual skills in dismantling electronics.

I don't know about a system reset.

Well, if you are not running the most recent software, you could try installing that.
You don't have much to lose.

Some folks (me included), have had problems with corrupt waypoints which
caused malfunctions.

What I did, was to bring in my waypoints on the SD card into Humminbird PC.
I then deleted duplicates, and cleaned them up.
Then, I deleted the ones saved on my system, then put the SD card back in
to re-load them.

I don't know if you mentioned this or not, but do you have a map card?
If so, have you tried the zooming in and out with just using the base
map that came with your system?

ColeM:
I have another suggestion.  You still might have some
debris (that you can't get to) between the plastic button and the on/off toggle.

I would try is to use a powerful shop vac or
vacuum, with a small nozzle attached to it.

Put that succer right up to the button and make sure
there's nothing in there.

Good Luck.

Try resetting your unit to the factory defaults.  That should reset the zoom setting but will not fix the issue with the button itself.

If you are dead set on dismantling the unit; please observe all ESD safe practices.

Thanks to all for the suggestions, I am going to start with a thorough clean, then a reset to factory defaults, and finally a re-install of latest software version. If none of these help then its out with the screw drivers...

Had to Google ESD, in my day it wasn't an acronym yet, we just called it anti static measures!  :)
