Interlink and two depth finders
« on: March 02, 2010, 10:39:09 AM »
If I have a 788 ci up front and a 789 ci in the back and hook them up to the Interlink will each show my GPS position based on its own internal antena? Or would I have to do some menu switching when I move from place to place on the boat?

Each would show its own position.  This setup also allows for the faster GPS refresh rate.  If you are sharing NMEA data through the interlink it will not give the higher refrsh rate.

Assuming you have updated your units to the 4.700 or later software.

Humminbird recommended to me not to connect the GPS antenna through the Interlink, but purchase a Y-cable to split between the two units.  I am still not clear as to the advantages of doing it this way.

Muskyhunter,

The reason is that if the GPS is hooked up to the Interlink you will not get the faster GPS refresh rates of 4 times per second.  The Interlink is only capable of refreshing the gps once per second.

If you hook the GPS directly to the unit and share the data, at least one unit is getting the faster refresh rate!

Here are some diagrams that show some different options for getting the "enhanced" gps refresh rate.

OK.  So I looked at all the posts and the link to enhanced refresh rate, but I still have questions.  I have my 798c si and my 727 feeding off the same gps receiver via the Y-cable.  Can I use the Interlink to tie them together so I can mark waypoints from my 727 up front and have the waypoints be logged on the 798 also?  I see two units tied together vai interlink, but they both have their own external gps also.  Don't really want to have to purchase another gps receiver and Y-cable.  Will waypoints that are logged from the 727 be downloadable via the NMEA output port to software on my laptop if I want?

YankeeDoodler,
If that y-cable you are referring to is really a SysLink cable connecting the GPS Receiver to both units than all you need is the InterLink and you are in business (see image below).

Yes you can download, modify or whatever to the waypoints on your 727 unit by using the Humminbird Connect cables and the NMEA output port.  You will need to install the HumminbirdPC program on your laptop for this.

Thanks Gregg.  Yes the cable is the Systemlink cable.  The diagram shows Y cables below each unit though.  Do I need these, or will I get everything I need w/ the Interlink package?  Right now I have the power, Systemlink, and transducers connected to each unit.

I already have the HumminbirdPc program loaded.

You are going to need both AS-YC Y-cables.  One should have come with your 798c Si unit but you will have to get one for your 727 unit.

Yes you are right.  I did get one of the AS-YC cables w/ the 798.  Thanks again.

Question regarding the 4 hz GPS update. Will this be reflected on the NMEA output? Or does the NMEA sentence still output at 1 sec interval?
