Looking for a second unit ??
« on: May 17, 2013, 01:48:43 PM »
Hi Guys

Im from Cornwall UK . I have the 898 Si with Navionics charts installed on my 20 foot boat . I also have a small rib , Im looking for a robust smaller (cheaper ) unit compatible with the same Navionics SD card , so that I can share data between 2 boats . Its a 12 foot inflatable so its wet !

Im not fussed about side or down imaging , just good sonar and good GPS and small size

Any advise on which unit to look at ?

Cheers oz

oz,
Depending on the screen size you want and what additional functions you should look at the 386ci,  597ci HD,  or 788ci HD units.  There are other 2D Sonar-GPS models besides these but you did not mention a price point or other specifications like maximum water depth or minimum number of pixels for the display.

Thanks for the fast reply I guess having used the 898 I am quite accustomed to high-end settings I'm certainly looking for something smaller and cheaper Is there a list of units which are compatible with my navionics charts?

Having looked further I think the 386 Ci may work for me price wise

Will that work with Navionics SD card ?

cheers oz

According to Navionics web site (http://www.navionics.com/sites/www.navionics.com/files/documents/EMEA_APAC%20CompatibilityGuide.pdf) the 386ci is compatible with the Navionics+ and Gold Marine Charts.  I do not know which Navionics SD Card you have but according to that chart as long as it is not a Platinum+ card it should work.

Ok Can I ask some more questions , im sure there are a few lurkers who will benefit

I have the wonderful 898 and Gold Navionics , now the 898 has 2 card slots , one for the Navionics SD and the second for my saved data

Now the 300 series and 500 series seem to have one card slot , my plan is to share the waypoints etc

So how will I transfer the data between a 2 slot unit and a 1 slot ?

many Thanks again

Oz

Extra questions will cost you more money, please deposit $0.25 in the coin slot on your computer… LOL!

No problems with more questions here Oz.

What you would have to do is export the Nav Data from the unit you want to share from to an SD card and then install the SD card in the unit you want to share the data to.  You may have to remove the mapping card on the 300 or 500 series unit but once loaded you can remove the SD card and re-install the mapping card.  The SD card does not have to remain in the unit.

I would add a step in here though to keep from loading Nav Data I do not want on the other units.  I would export the Nav Data to the SD card but than load that data into HumminbirdPC and delete all of the unwanted tracks, routes and waypoints that I do not want to load.  In fact I would keep separate GPX files for each unit and load the new data into those files and then load those files into their respective units.

I am doing the same thing. I have an 898hdsi. What I plan on doing is getting a 798si, mounting on the bow of the boat with ethernet, and then putting the transducer on my jon boat, that way I can sidescan the smaller lakes/ponds that I fish also.
