sorry if this has been asked before........couldnt find an answer while searching.        i've had my 998 rolling since august and its flawless.  today i noticed a major amount of clicking coming from the transducer that i've never noticed before.  nothing new that i can narrow it down too, as in striking an object or something.      the water temp was 36f early in the am but warmed up to 40.

any advice is greatly appreciated.              oh.......forgot.  i've had no performance issues what so ever.  every screen and application is perfect.

The boating traffic must have been very light when you were out.
Finally quiet enough to hear what you have been missing, huh?
The clicking is the sonar pulse in either 83 khz or 200 khz.

Additional note: the colder water is denser and transmits sounds better along with your boat hull being colder, therefore stiffer and transmits sound better.

gotcha!!!!!  makes perfect sense.  i'd been fishing this summer in some super quiet spots and never noticed it.  and i sit in the back of the boat next to the transducer. but the other day i could hear it in the front of the boat.  i've heard propellers and such thru the bottom of the boat but this was a first.   thanx so much for the reply!

As a diver we always know when sonar is being used.  Also the surafce radio to the divers hears the clicks.  If you put your hand on the ducer you can feel the clicks.  Chuck

Absolutely right Chuck, hehe!

The archaeologist divers went bananas last year if I had my unit not turned off when they were in the water and had their underwater radio with them.

 I jusy read an article in the January Bassin magazine  titled:Run silent and shallow. In the article Bassmaster  classic winner Alton Jones said: Especially in shallow water, I think it is really important to turn off your electronics. Just as you can hear the tic-tic-tic of the sonar ping when the trolling motor is out of the water, fish can hear or feal it in the water as well. The shallower you are fishing, the more important stealth becomes. Stealth is the best boat trick I know. End of quote.  I never knew there were so many tricks to the trade. My aging ears can't hear this sound, but I bet the fish can!!!
