I finally got my new unit and wanted to make sure I have the latest software.

You will want to create and account and register your unit on the Humminbird web site. The latest revison for your 999 will be available for download along with Humminbird PC, which is a good waypoint management and waypoint backup tool.

Also register the unit with Humminbird Select to get the extra year warranty.

7.460 was released for the 999 about a month ago......You will want to get that version..

You will also want to test the 800Khz on your unit as soon as you can to see if your unit has the fix for the 800khz washout issue.

800Khz isn't that important to some people.....But if it were mine, I'd call customer service and get it fixed while it is in warranty....If you get signed up for HB select, you will have 2 years to get it done. You can plan to send it in for the fix when you don't need it.

It looks like my unit came with version 7.020 installed. Does that mean it's an older unit that probably doesn't have the 800khz fix?

The units have been in the pipeline for a while. I doubt any of the units will have the 7.460 software from the factory yet.

If you try the unit in 800Khz you will know if you have the problem......The screen will be washed out.
Do a search for 800khz washout on here.

Wow...This is very disappointing to find out. I guess I should have done more research before pulling the trigger on this 999. I almost went with a comparable Lowrance. This may have been the thing to sway me to the darkside.

I'm sure they will too. Their customer service is darn good. It just seems like a bit of a hassle to have to go through for a brand new expensive product.

Please contact support Humminbird and be ready to call the unit serial number. So it is possible to determine there is a problem with frequency 800kHz or not.
Software version does not affect this. I want to thank customer service. I had this problem and it was solved in a few days.
I do not see any difficulties.

I'm not sure when I'll get the boat on the water as I've been kayak fishing a lot. Is this washout issue something I could test with the transducer in a bucket of water in my driveway?

The transducer is not going to work correctly without being in the water.

Your best bet is to call customer service ..... have your serial number when you call them. They will be able to tell you if you need the fix.

Since it is going to be a while before you can use it....Now would be a good time to do that ..... Make sure you ask them to send you a shipping label if you need the fix.

It was posted on another forum today that the fix is needed for any 99 series unit before September 2013 MFG date.
(The first 6 number in the serial number will tell you the year/month/day) Ex 131220 = 2013/12/20.

Before or after September 2013?
Strangely, my unit was made in December 2013.

Mine was also made in December 2013 (131205 to be exact). I called HB on Monday and got a return authorization for the Washout issue. The manufacture date was never mentioned. Before I send it back I am calling them again and will talk with technical support about the date issue.

Kinda strange they didn't ask for the serial #.

It would probably be a good idea to call them regardless of your serial # just to make sure what they say........And test the unit on the water to see if your unit is OK.

If you recently bought the unit and signed up for Humminbird Select, there is plenty of time to get it done.

I have never been happy with my unit's 800khz performance as it has always appeared 'washed out' to me but until I read this thread I never knew there was a possible hardware problem. If I fiddle with my settings a lot I can get stuff to appear on the screen at 800khz but its not easy and the Left Side image is much worse than the Right side. Are there any actual screen shots showing what the 'washed out' screen looks like versus a good quality 800khz screen?

I just got off the phone with Humminbird to verify if my HB999 unit (manufactured 13/12/05= Dec 5, 2013) needed to be recalled for the washed out screen issue. YES!
Customer Service told me that any unit made between September 2013 and September 2014 is be included.

I have no confidence in what a customer service rep at HB says....it seems they all know something different regarding this issue.
I feel like I should call again about mine.

So, I called again earlier and as expected I get a different answer.
This rep says: "I've been told different dates as to where the problem ends in manufacturing as well. It's probably best to just send it in just in case it has the issue; it won't cost you anything to have us take a look at it."

This is where I'll send it in, it will get damaged in shipping, I'll file an insurance claim, the shipping company will deny to pay my claim sighting "improper packaging". I'll hassle with all this and be without a brand new fish finder I just paid $1,400 for for who knows how long. Yes, I've been down this road a couple of times.
Sorry for all the negativity but this is not what I signed up for when I ordered this unit a couple of weeks ago. At this point I'm strongly considering retuning it for a full refund and going a different route. Is this unit good enough once working properly to deal with all this?Thanks for all the help guys?

I am sending my back for repair tomorrow. As for returning it and going a different direction I won't even consider it. Other than this washout issue my units has been great. The more I use/learn it the better I like it. My fishing buddy and I both upgraded our electronics at the same time...I went HB999si and he went Lowrance Gen2 LSS(structure scan). We alternate boats so I have seen his and used it a bunch and he has done the same with mine. While he hasn't had any problems with his Lowrance he is just about ready to sell it and go HB. Ease of use, image picture and the simplicity of my HB has him sold.

IMHO until somebody like Apple or Samsung decides to enter this market we will be pretty much stuck with these type units and their crude interfaces. It will probably take an outsider to revolutionize the Sonar/GPS/SideImaging marketplace and give us intuitively easy units with wireless connections at a decent price point. Until then we got what we got.

I have the 999 ci with the 7.460 software on it. Having trouble with it communicating with Terrova I-Pilot Link. Numerous calls to HB and Minnkota. Nobody seems to have the answer yet.

Talked to HB this AM. I have two 999's, and one needs to be fixed. Sending it in tomorrow. The other one does not have the current version of 7.460, it was 7, something. I guess I should update it. How do I do that? Do I plug it into my PC using a USB cable?

I have the version 7.460 on my unit. The other unit has version 7.06. Was told the new update for the I-pilot link was not compatible with either version. Was told they could revert my unit back to earlier version then they decided that would ruin my unit as it was purchased with version 7.46. They sent me a new head for the unit which I installed. It still would not accept the new download for I-pilot link. I get Software Download Failed every time.

The I-pilot will navigate a heading and I can use cruise control. It will not navigate to a waypoint nor will it follow an itrack or backtrack. I have been dealing with this for nearly 3 weeks now. HB and Minnkota are responsive but I have talked to so many people that do not seem to know anything about how to resolve my problem. I have attempted to download the new software while on the phone with two different representatives. I have restored factory defaults, formatted my sd card, tried different cards, and replaced tge existing head with the new one sent to me be MK.

They claim they are sending me two new heads with the new software already on it. Waiting for them to arrive.

I have had my 999 for less than a month, because of weather in North Texas have only been on the lake once and then it was to windy to leave the marina area. I just now became aware of this washout problem. Mine serial number shows Oct 2014, One month after the month the problem is suppose to have been fixed. Now at home I am only using simulation mode and the screen definitely looks washed out in the 800kHz. Is that a true test of what the wash out looks like?

Checking the serial number and work in simulation mode does not detect a problem! Only in the test operation on the open water. Who writes s/n until September 2013, who from September 2013 to September 2014. Now, in October 2014. The guys do not confuse themselves and others. Kind regards.

Brazos, you really need to test the unit on the water to see if it has the 800kHz washout problem. The dates they are going by are September 2013 to September 2014. Usually when they set dates for things like this, they add a little extra time in there just to catch any straggles, so to speak. Your unit should be fine but I would test it the next time you are on the water to be sure.

I sent my HB999 in for the SI washout fix and got it back very quickly. Today was my first day on the water to be able to test it. The 800khz now appears to be working properly. There is significantly more detail on my screens and the sensitivity settings really make a difference whereas before they just helped marginally. I'll spend more time on my next outing really tinkering with the settings to see how good it can be but at this point I'm a much happier camper.

I tested mine out on the water a couple of weeks ago, and the 800 kHZ does not look washed out to me. So will assume mine is okay and not worry anymore about it. Also I really cannot tell any difference between the 455 and the 800 kHZ, the pics both look the same to me.

The best comparison test between the 455kHz and the 800kHz is to scan the exact same structure in the exact same boat path ... At the exact same speed ...

The underwater world has way too many Enviromental variables to compare "this piece of water" verses "that piece of water" ...
