788 not reading bottom consistently
« on: November 11, 2011, 05:51:09 PM »
I just hooked up my new 788ci hd di and water tested it.    At certain times it stopped reading the bottom correctly.   It would read 2 and 5 feet then 40 then back to 2 in water I knew was 140.   This happened in all screen views.    Later on it worked fine while trolling.   Then with the main motor fired up it lost bottom again.   I tried adjusting every setting I could think of to no avail.   I even shut off both motors and nothing.   Then it eventually found bottom correctly for a time at 10-25 mph.   I currently have the power hooked to the ignition wire as I had my old 565 hooked up.   I'm putting in a fuse box and wiring it to that tonight.   Do you think being wired to the ignition wire could have been the issue even if  the motors are off?
Its bad luck to be superstitious.

I would do a process of elimination.
Hook your sonar to a battery by itself with nothing else attached to
it and try it.

You could also have turbulence around your transducer at certain
speeds, mostly fast speeds which is causing the sonar to shoot
through aerated water.  You may have to adjust your transducer
for best performance.
