Help with a 798ci hd si
« on: December 24, 2011, 08:43:23 AM »
I got the unit for an early Christmas present and installed it a few weeks ago.  I did the upgrade on the firmware to 5.84. It did fine the first time out. I have a 12VDC power supply so I have been powering it up in the house and loading in waypoints I had saved in my old GPS by typing them into Humminbird PC.  Everything was fine after I added everything. I used the new waypoint management feature, made a folder for each lake put waypoints in the folders, then I started deleting waypoints that were in the main waypoint folder  in the unit and it locked up. After powering it down it locks up on random screens (that have map data, or screen shots, imaging screens are fine).  I put it on the boat, no difference.  I've tried restoring defaults, reloading the firmware update (it won't take it because it is already ver 5.84), not using a SD card, etc.  It almost seems like the base map is gone? Any suggestions?

Wonder if the restore of old waypoints might have ended up in corruption. There seems to be some issues with this over the units.
Is is possible to factory restore your unit?  Delete all waypoints and factory restore again. May have to do this several times to get all the waypoints out..
Try the unit with out the sd card for your PC waypoints.
One thing we have been asking for is a full reset of the HB base code like several other mfg's do.  This would in effect clear corruption in the unit. Not sure that this is being done now at a field level.
Let us know.

I talked to hummingbird today.  I had it powered up while I had them on the phone.  They suggested deleting all the waypoints, but the unit locks up when I try to go to waypoints management.  They had me ship it to them.  Maybe i will just mark new waypoints when I get it back.  It seems like it would just give you a fault for a bad waypoint instead of locking the unit up?  I program a lot of industrial machines and you have to make things idiot proof (even if I'm the idiot) . you can't write a plc program then let operators put in bad parameters and shut it down completely.

I agree, software should not lock up with bad or corrupted data.  Only the operating code should do that. If at all.
But this is 2011 well almost 2012 and code writers are not what they used to be in all cases. Sometimes budgets for a project are not allowing the necessary funds to make sure all is fine..
