Title: Only have one unit, How to make the most out of it!!!
Post by: Carl Morton on January 01, 2014, 05:26:05 AM
Wife got me the 899 for Christmas and its the best present ever!! Trying to read up on it but have a ?. I really want to mount it on console at drivers side for the side imagining but need to have the down scan switch fire for drop shoting up front on trolling motor!! Would it be best to get 2 transducers or what?? I would hate having to switch back and forth but another unit isn't an option at this point!! Any ideas on how one can find a happy medium would be appreciated!! thks Carl

Some have set up a complete second station to move the head unit back and forth...this would require a second xducer, second gimbal mount, second power supply, second cable collector, second GPS antenna (if you add the external antenna to the 899)...

Some have set up a second station with the HB TS3 switch ...this would require a second xducer, the HB TS3 switch, and an external GPS antenna for mounting closer to the front xducer (for waypoint accuracy).....then you can swivel the head unit around where you can see it from the front...

Just like every other fisherman. Just got one unit and already wants another.  ;D  Congrats bud. I was just in the same boat as you. I ended up just getting a swivel mount so that I can see my screen from the drivers seat or the casting platform. If I were you I would just go out and USE THE THING!! Get familiar with it before you start racking your brain on how to use it all over the boat. There is a BIG learning curve with using these things and actually understanding what you are looking at.

Yo I have had mine for a year and I STILL value it as one of my top possessions. Side imaging def. does NOT catch the fish for you, but boy is it nice to see a full channel running from right to left for hundreds of feet, instead of just a dip in the 2d screen. I have been out 15-20 times with mine and I learn something every time. There are days where I go out alone and just scout around mapping and charting stuff. Its a whole 'nother world down there!!. P.S. I just got a decent RAM swivel mount because I got tired of running up and back with my castnet when looking for bait. Im hoping now that I can just troll around on the casting deck and mark some nice schools.

This is what Im going to do I like crappie fishing so I'm putting my new 999 on my console to find structure/fish and soon as a few more Ben Franklin s come to visit me I'm just going to put new 200-300 unit on my bow. I figure soon as I find what Im looking far while motoring the boat then all I will need is a marker buoy and a basic no frills view.
