Software Version 5.2
« on: February 03, 2011, 09:30:35 PM »
If I understand correctly the new software version will fix the shallow water problem.  My unit currently does not read very well in depths of 5' or less.

I have to 898 units interlinked.  I can't remember what version of software I have but I do know when I bought my units the interlink did not work very well.  Humminbird sent me a new version of software that was still being beta tested and wasn't out yet, therefore, I don't remember the version.  Since I installed the beta version the units work great except in shallow water.  Should I install the 5.2 version?  I'm sort of afraid of messing them up.

Thanks,

Fishfor5,

Check your software version and definitely let us know what installed.  You can do this by pressing the Menu button when prompted at startup and checking the system status.

I would say probably go ahead and do it.  I have not heard of really any issues with updates since humminbird fixed the issue with the last update.  Just follow the directions posted in the FAQ section.

I installed the Version 5.210 on my 898 last week. I  tried the new version on the Rhein and I have still problems with depth reading in shallow water less than 5´. My old version was 4.880 and I restored defaults before I was updating.
Any ideas ?

Is the trouble with the depth not reading right or is the display not showing the bottom correctly as in the type and structure of the bottom?

The trouble with the depth not reading is right. In less than 5`water depth the unit depth is about 1`. When the water depth is more than 5´, the depth reading is correct. I set the max. depth to 45`in 30´deep water. I had the same problem with software 4.970, so I installed 4.880 again. With the original software I have no problems with depth reading.

Chuck,
The depth just starts acting crazy and the bottom doesn't read at all.

Michael,
My units came with 4.880 and I noticed the same problem with that version as well.  I personally can't go back to that because that is what was causing my interlink problems.  The reason I am a little reluctant to change versions of software is because my units work great other than the shallow readings.

Shallow depths can be somewhat challenging, but our 1197 does not have any problems with 2 or 3 feet...
Sounds like some more software testing is necessary for HB......
