I assume you are talking about the 5.210 software update for the 798.

12/6/2010 12:00:00 AM - v5.210 This release has changes that affect the following areas: DownImaging, SI Terrain mode, SI Navigation, Custom Chart Menu, Downrigger Menus

I dont have a 798 but see that it notes the Custom Chart Menu?  Maybe Greg or someone can shed some light on the changes made in 5.210.

I have it loaded on my798ci SI. I haven't noticed any chart setting changes, I don't mess that much anyway.
It gives a new SI view with no water column in the Enhance menu.
It adds the color pallet selection to the Down Imaging X-press menu.
It allows for range lines in a couple of views.

Now that I have it, I don't remember too much other differences. My 1198c SI came with that software version.

The best word for a discription is BIG.
Otherwise it does the same as the 798 with an added SI frequency.
Here they are beside each other:

Found the changes you mention. Really like the contour view. Still haven't seen any changes in the navigation menu.

I’ll comment on those changes that I have heard about or read about in one of the new operations manuals.  I have not had the time (or weather) to go out on a boat with one of the units that has the 5.210 software yet.

The SI Navigation menu is found under the Navigation menu tab.
The Contour Mode menu is found under the Sonar menu tab (I’ve also been told that it is available in the SI Enhance menu).
The SI Range Lines menu is found under the Sonar menu tab.

SI Navigation controls how the boat icon is displayed in Side Imaging® Views.
If SI Navigation is turned on, the boat icon indicates the direction the boat needs to turn to reach the next waypoint during navigation. The boat icon color will also change to orange.
If SI Navigation is turned Off, the boat icon will not change during navigation although you can still mark waypoints and start navigation from a Side Imaging® View.

Contour Mode (incorrectly called the Terrain mode in the software release notes)
Allows you to display or hide the water column on the Side Imaging® View.
When Contour Mode is Off, the water column is displayed on the Side Imaging® View.
When Contour Mode is On, the bottom is graphed at a constant point on the display regardless of changes in depth.  The Side Imaging beams are divided by a vertical line on the display.

Si Range Lines divide each side beam range into 4 equal sections on the display.  SI Range Lines can be used to interpret the location of objects on the display.  You can turn SI Range Lines On (visible) or Off (hidden).
Note: The range numbers are estimated and should not be used for measurements.

You should also have the ability to use sonar zoom in the Di sonar View.  This works just like the Si sonar zoom as you can move the cursor around the screen and select the zoom level you want.

OK, now I am excited.  I have been waiting to update my units but will post some images when done.

My big question is, "Is the Contour Mode using the Slant Range correction to correct the image on the screen?"

Darn good question Robert......I too am a bit confused about the intent.   The weather needs to warm a bit so we can try.
Good points for a seminar also.....
Maybe Greg can weigh in again with better detail...

I got nothing on this guys: I don’t know how they are doing this.  I haven’t even been able to go out on the water with a unit with this software in it (darn job duties keep getting in the way of my fun!).

Thanks for the info and screen shots.   It will still be a couple of months or more before mine will see water again.  Thx.

Hah!  One step closer to actually being on a boat, in the water with one of the new units with the 5.210 software – well at least I got to borrow a 798c HD Si unit and looked at the Contour mode while in the Simulator mode…  I also traded e-mails with one of the Marketing guys who said that they do use a slant range correction for this mode.

Gentlemen: I've been out of the loop for a while. In checking software versions for my units I see that Version 5.210 is listed for both my 998 and 798. When I download this version on an SD card can I load this one into both units or is there some difference between the versions/units?

Spnb8,

They are different for each unit.  You will need to download the correct file for each one from your Humminbird Account.

It is also recommended that they are not both on the same card when you perform the update.  It really should not matter, but better safe than sorry.
