Title: Depth reading at WOT
Post by: Jimliner on September 13, 2012, 08:49:35 PM
I had problems with depth readings from the first time on the water.  Reading bouncing all over from 1' to 300'.  Whether stopped, trolling or running main engine.  Set depth range to 10 feet more than water I was in.  Didn't help.
I made a location change to transducer, this greatly improved side imaging and improved depth reading, significantly less bouncing on depth reading.  But, still the ocassional bouncing.

Changed "Surface Clutter" from 1 to 6.  BINGO.  Depth reading stable all the time, from stopped to WOT.

I read the "Surface Clutter" adjustment in one of the posts, which I can't relocate, Big thanks to that post.

I can now leave the other transducer on the transom off.  (Depth bouncing was present with 2nd transducer off).

I have found it best to turn surface clutter just high enough to stabilize depth reading, my unit that is 3-4 on surface clutter.

Hi
I had the same problem as you. I am trolling at the Lake of Constance in Germany for Trout. My 898cx combo has been even shipped back to the US for troubleshooting. After return it still had the problem with depth bouncing. I called my dealer and he told me that they have a software problem with sweet water adjustment. So, I changed in the Menu to saltwater and to a Manual depth of 300 meters and no bouncing anymore. Of course it is not the way do to because of maybe wrong depth reading. Also, after return of my unit from the US, I have a Software Version of 6.420 installed. Hope that HB will solve the problem with the next Software release.

Different bodies of water could call for different adjustments on the unit.  The software cannot automatically adjust for all of them.  However, if you were to make a short sonar recording in an area where you have seen this happen (with the unit rest to the factory defaults) and ask that it be given to the Engineers at Humminbird, then they may be able to incorporate the changes needed into a future software release.

Hi Greg, I am sure that the subject is already by HB, because the dealer, his name is Thomas Schlageter, have had a meeting in the US with HB were this issue was discussed as well. I can make screen shots of that issue or even record this bouncing when I am the next time out on the lake. Thanks for you suggestion.
Regards Bernd

Greg, sorry I forgot to ask you about my Software which is installed at my 898. I have the Version 6.4xx and the  actual version is 6.1xx. Do they have installed in the US the wrong Software or what you think about this???
Thanks in advanced for you answer

If your unit was shipped back to the US for troubleshooting than the latest (6.490) software was loaded on it.
