898C transducer location
« on: July 12, 2011, 02:18:42 PM »
Hi All,
I need some feedback on where to mount my XHS-9-HDSI-180-T transom mount transducer for an 898C SI. I have a 2008 Tahoe Q4 ski and fish. I’ve read some posts where there are reception issues based on mounting location. I have a fiberglass boat and I just want to drill once so I’m adhering to the old adage of measure twice and drill once by getting as much information as I can before drilling.  I’ve attached some pictures of the transom. Thanks for any help.  John

Take a look at the following link: www.sternmate.com

I have installed 3 of these, one on my boat, and I am extremely pleased with it. No holes to be drilled in the hull at all and it allows a lot of adjustability. It also makes for a very professional installation. I have no interest in the company at all, just a very happy customer.

Good luck and I am confident you will be very pleased with the 898.

Is Stermate the one that attaches with adhesive tape?  If so that may be the best way to go as good mounting locations look few and far between on you hull…

Are the rear projecting areas of the hull to the right and left of the motor both flat, curved or at a slant angle to the flat area that the motor is mounted to?

SternMate™ adhesive is a proprietary 2 part OEM product. Its molecular design was formulated particularly suitable for SternMate™. Unfortunately "adhesives tapes" were not suitable and failed prematurely with foam spilt.

Thanks for the input fishfinger. I went to the site and read up on the installation. It looks like you have more transducer adjustment range and an attachment that is better than screws. It is a litttle expensive though, $120.00. John

Thanks for your reply Greg. Area 1 is flat and and plumb when the boat is level. Area 2 has a slight slope toward the bow from top to bottom and has a slight horizontal curvature.   John

A little pricey but I don't think you would regret using one. Good luck with your install.

I don’t like mounting the Si transducers on any curved part of the transom unless a fill in piece can be made to make it plumb with where the motor is mounted.  Maybe Capthn_c can let us know if this is possible with his product or not.  That would be a good one transducer solution, otherwise…

It looks like you may have to look at installing two HDSi transducers (plus the AS-Si-LR-Y cable) in the Area 1 location; one on each side of the outdrive.

Greg, are you suggesting mounting 2 transducers because of concern about interference from the lower drive unit? If I were to mount 1 transducer on the right side of the 2 vertical cables in area 1, I would be 14 in to the right of the lower unit centerline and have 12 in of clearance between the bottom of the transom and the lower unit with the lower unit slightly uptilt. I was thinking of trying that and if I have interferance from the lower unit I could add a second transducer on the right side of the transom. What do you think of that?  John.

Sounds like a good plan to me John.  If you have 12 inches of clearance between the bottom of the hull and the outdrive it may work without having to tilt up the lower unit.

To avoid the guesswork and likely incorrect mounting location for your imaging transducer, it's a great idea to know exactly what your transducer will "see" prior to installation.    http://www.sternmate.com/Where.html   Now, one will not have to depend upon where others may have installed theirs, which could very well be incorrect for your boat...identical or not.
