I would mess around with the settings, chart speed, sensitivity etc. till you get the clearest picture possible...All in all not bad for your first trip out with it. Ive had mine for a few months and still tweak according to speed-water depth-water clarity....Your well on you way though...Kepp the forum posted on your progress, it may help others

Hey crazyju,
first of all congratulations to your unit. It's an awesome device, you'll love it!
Can you explain what you've scanned there ? Are that bridge pillars ? While scanning and looking for objects, try keep traveling a straight line, it really looks like you didnt. What sensivity did you use ? It looks like something above 12,  there is a bit too much grainy stuff in the water column.

Greetings,
Del

Sensitivity was on 8. That is a marina and it is angled  to the water. I was going pretty straight.

Well, sorry the grainy stuff might just be the sharpness you've probably set. Play around with the unit on the water, and find your best settings. On the water the sharpness might help to point your eyes on interesting stuff, but actually i think it also changes the appearance of objects, too. For records i would scan with shapness completely off.

Following settings worked verry well to me:
Speed 2.5kph
Depth Range around 3 times the depth
Frequency 455kHz
Chart speed 3
Sensitivity 12
Contrast 10
Sharpness Off or Low

These settings needs to be adjusted 1 or 2 above or below from unit to unit and from different locations (freshwater, saltwater etc). If you want to try an different color set, try Amber 1, it's pretty good to identify interesting objects on it. I personally still prefer the blue one :)

Just to tell you, your pictures showing a working setup, you'll just have to find your favourit settings and you're done.

Good Luck,
Del

I'm still a long way from an expert with these things, but your sonar pic looks good.  The down imaging appears to have the sensitivity set too high.

Were you on a lake or in a river?  The reason I ask is I'm wondering if the down image may be a result of current turbulance in a river.  If you have the sonar set to clear the turbulance probably wouldn't show up in the 2D sonar, but still would in the down image.

Your speed of .3 is a bit slow.  most work best at 1.5 or above up thru trolling speeds..\Chuck

The 2D Sonar looks like fish on the bottom and you where vertical fishing. I hope i'm right on this, if not then there where some fish going up/down directly under your boat :P I've also got problems seeing fish on the DI. Actually i think DI is best for identifying structure and 2D works better for identifying fish. Ofc this changes if you're looking for swarms of bait or bigger fish, or for really big fish, or for fish thats outside the 2D reange in shallow water. The "clouds" on the DI might be current or. Decreasing the sesivity would give you a clearer image i think, but also hide some details for you.

Edit// Just noticed youre on Chickamauga lake.

Greetings,
Del

No, freshwater lake. I had di sensitivity on 8 i turned it down but then it would show nothing. I am getting some pretty good shots with the side imageing but am also getting the clutter in the water column.

The clutter in the water coloumn is a typically return from SI units. I'm having the same return on lots of my records. Have you been fishing or has your unit been detecting fish below your boat ? The 2D return really looks like that.

Here is another taken with same setting. This is what i would expect to see in the DI.I have fished everytime that i think it is showing fish. No takers yet.

Judging by the corresponding sonar shadows I'd say the picture in reply 17 definitely shows fish on the right hand side of the boat.

Not sure if that is a boat in the following picture or not, but it does kind of resemble one.

Yes that is fish you can easily see the shadows of them, while theres no objects in front of the shadows. To help you deciding if it's a boat or something else, i would always consider the size. To me it pretty much looks like a boat tbh. You probably should do an 2nd record of it by any chance.

Great records!

Went back to the point and the fish were still there. Now if I could just figure out how to catch them.

Maybe you should try a concussion lure like this one:
 >:D  ;D

On your Di sonar it looks like you were seeing a bit of surface clutter.  The 2D sonar has a menu that helps filter this out (Surface Clutter menu) that the Si/Di sonar does not have.

Thanks Greg. Yeah that lure may be my only chance. I fished this point for 3 hours this weekend with no fish.
