Shallow water reading???
« on: January 06, 2012, 08:01:22 AM »
Hello Fellas,

I have a Humminbird 1198 Csi  on the front deck with a trolling motor SI transducer and the unit has a hard time reading shallow water (DI or sonar view), especially when fishing on grass (5 feet or less).
Being so shallow I am not concern with the image but the depth reading goes crazy... 1.5, than 300, than 2...
Any tips on it?

Thanks for the help…!

Marcos

Marcos,
If you are in five feet of water over grass; what depth does the grass start at (how deep is it from the surface to the top of the grass)?

Does this happen over other bottom types that do not have grass?

Is there another sonar unit running on the boat at the same time?  If so, try turning it off and see if that helps or not.

Are you running the latest software version in your 1198c Si unit?  If not, update the software and test it again.

Hey Greg.
It is worst on grass but It also happens on hard bottom.
I am running a 1198 on the bow and a 998 on the console and usually I keep both units on.
I just update the software and I will try with the second unit off.
Also I will try the suggested setting (from other topics here).

Thanks for the help! :)

How is your unit set up, what is your sensitivity readings.

You may want to look at Doug's 9 part video seminars it has helped me to get back to the basics and better understand how to get the most out of my unit.  Scroll down on the page to get to the seminars, the site has a lot of good videos.

We have a lot of hydrila or mifoil here in Tenn and I get a lot of garbage on my screen when I get into the grass. Will turning down the sensativity correct the problem and still show good bottom returns in soft bottom conditions. It is not uncommon to run into stump beds within the grass flats.

Yes, I would expect hydrila, mifoil, etc. show up on the screen, but there are also times that we can screw up the screen with how the unit is set up.

Also, adjusting switchfire clear mode or max mode, we need to use all of the adjustment to clean the screen up.  In the dirtiest water we may not be able to have a nice clean screen.  You can pause the screen, and make a lot of adjustments unit you get it as best as possible.

Using these settings, I can achieve solid lock on 1.5 ft and more:

Switchfire : Clear
Beam: 200 kHz only
Sensivity: 0 to 3 depending of bottom.

I guess my problem is when going from deep water  over 10 feet which is deeper then milfoil grows into 5 feet where it is thick. I will just have to manually adjust each time I make that transition.
