New to towfish section - considering towfish project.
« on: February 27, 2014, 03:39:58 PM »
Hello,

I have been using a HB 797c2i which I bought when they first came out. I fish mainly in shallow coastal waters, 25 to 80 foot depths. The 797 performed very well but I recently removed it to make room for a new Raymarine head unit. In recent years I have spent more time looking for structure and wrecks to dive and spearfish. I thought deploying the 797 as a towfish might help in thiese efforts. I do have the newer transducer than the on that shipped with the unit originally.

My questions:

Does the 797 work well as the si unit for a homemade towfish?

What running depth is best for surveying 50 to 60 foot depths.?

Does anyone have plans they would be willing to share for PVC based construction?

I build commercial displays and signs for a living and have all the fabrication tools in my shop for plastic and aluminum, including a 3-axis cnc router table.

I also have a down rigger for trolling already installed on my boat if that can be used for pulling the towfish.

Anything to point me in the right direction to get started will be much appreciated.

Thanks for your input.

If I'm missing, I must be fishing...

Hi Butchbal

Welcome to the forum :)

Of course you can also use a towfish for your 797. You will find many induviduelle solutions here in the forum. Depending on the design, you can also use the downrigger as fish, the transducher must be brought only direction stabilized at depth.
Have fun with the build and let us participate in your project.
