Transducer Placement on 07' Procraft 200 combo
« on: April 05, 2012, 11:00:31 AM »
I'm looking for some advice on placement of a transducer for a 898C HD SI on a 07' Procraft 200 Combo.  I've searched this forum and the internet sideways and have yet to come across a similar install.  I've attached some images of the rear of my boat for reference and would appreciate any sound advice.

Also - I've read that the stock transducer that comes with the 898c doesn't perform well at high speeds.  Can someone elaborate a little on this?

Thank you
Ben

Ben,
First off with that hull it looks to me like you will have to get the body of that big HDSi transducer below the level of those sponsons (shown by red line in picture).  I would think about mounting it on either side of the motor mount (see green boxes in picture).  This would force you to have to install an inside-the-hull 2D DualBeam transducer and an AS-Si-DB-Y cable to connect both transducers to the 898c Si unit.  An inside-the-hull transducer is usually the best setup for high speed water depth readings on a fiberglass boat though.  This also helps protect the more expensive to replace HDSi transducer as well.

The big HDSi transducer of the 898c Si (and other) unit is fully capable of high speed water depth readings as long as you can install it in a location that will allow for it.  Problem is that with its size, and the fact that it also needs to be mounted in a location for the Si sonar to work, this is not always possible on all boat makes and models.

Greg

Thanks for the reply.

Can you provide a part number for the inside-the-hull 2D dualbeam transducer?

Also - should I be able to mount the SI transducer where you indicated with the mounting hardware that came in the box?

Thank you
Ben

XP-9-20 inside-the-hull DualBeam transducer.
Don’t forget the AS-Si-DB-Y splitter cable as well.

Yes, the transom mount hardware should work well in that location.  Just make sure that the whole body of the transducer is below the level of the motor mount and sponsons.

You will probably get some motor blockage of a side signal unless you have the motor tilted upwards.
speeds above trolling will probably lose good SI and depth..

Good point Chuck.  I could not tell what sort of clearance he would have to the motor at that location.  With the big HDSi transducer you need 7 inches of clearance for the Si sonar signal from both sides of the transducer.

He might want to do a temp mount and see. He could use a light grade of glue to try and then if it works he can drill or use permament epoxy.

True but I would recommend some marine grade double sided tape for this.  That metal bracket has plenty of surface area for this, just be sure and clean both the transom and metal bracket of any wax or oils and grease before installing.  We have used this method to test transducers for many, many years and have even left some on for some of those years (though I recommend using screws for high-speed testing or use).  You should be able to find this stuff at an automotive store as they use it to install chrome and other detail pieces on cars.
