ONIX8ciSI Cross Touch + AD1429 Adaptor
« on: January 13, 2023, 11:01:21 AM »
So i've been doing a little research on the OnixciSI Cross Touch (that I believe was put out 2pasture back in 2016) & my guess is this it was kinda like the Solix of itz day back when the final Core Units (ie: xx9/ xxx9) were running the show & wondering if it possessed the internal programming 4the QuadBeam Function (provided an AD1429 adapter was present of course)?
Im trying 2weigh the Pros & Cons seeing as it looks like I just might be able 2 pick 1 up for cheap (CHO) But It just seems as though the XT14 20HDSI Transducer has become abit of a commodity & this would even apply 2the XT14 74HDSI w/my only other option being the newer Mega Transducers as per XT14 20 MSI / XT14 74 MSI & all hovering around the same price pt as well (believe it or not) & furthermore, all of which would cost me more than the ONIX CH itself when all is said & done.
Now I know if I were 2connect an XHS9 HDSI 180 Transducer via "said" adaptor cable that I would lose DI 4lack of a dedicated piezo element & seeing as I really dont care much for DI anyway, as i feel good 2D Sonar + SI more than covers the type of fishing I do where i.m.o. DI is more of a thing for Deep Water like Saltwater Fishing & such.
Lastly would be the horror stories I've been finding in my research that upgrading the Software on the ONIX Units can be a near death sentence more often than not & would these findings apply morseo 2the earlier released units of 2014 vs the latter releases of 2016 as well?
2 Summarize, I'm basically asking if any1 has had any experience either using an MSI Transducer or an XHS9 HDSI 180+AD1429 adaptor w/the ONIX Units when they did not have the Default  XT14 20HDSI or an XT14 74HDSI Transducer available 2them (for 1 reason or another) & not 2mention IF therez a "Safe or Safer Way" 2do the necessary Software Upgrades w/o risking potential disaster?
According 2the Serial #, this unit was Mfg in 2016 so I'm kinda hopeing itz 1 of the 1z that will make the cut.
Cheers, Sandro
ps-i recently noticed a post on this forum from some years back about an individual asking why his "Mega" SI wasnt working w/an MSI Transducer... well, last I checked, the ONIX is not even capable of Mega SI nor Mega DI wether the MSI Transducer is present or not?
The ONIX does 2D Chirp (software upgrade) & DI + SI up to 800khz where Mega is 1200khz. Nonetheless, that unit was an NT version where this one is a Touch Version & in either case, the SI "should work" - just Not at 1200khz & hence some of my Concerns 4this second hand ONIXciSI Cross Touch CH that I'm expressing an interest in.
Thanks Again, Sandro.

I’ve used just about all HB xducers on an ONIX (except no MEGA xducers)  ...

It’s important to understand the difference in how the transmitters (2d/DI/SI) are controlled in core units (numbered and HELIX) and conversely the ONIX (which preceded SOLIX but it’s the same platform)  ...

*Core units utilize Menu selections for specific xducer models. Because each of the HB xducer models have certain piezo configurations and frequency capabilities - each choice in the Transducer Selection Menu in the HB Menu knew which transmitter to fire - and then the frequency choice was selected in a different Menu  ...

*The ONIX platform was leftover from another Sonar company that Humminbird bought to bring out Cross Touch technology  ... This platform utilizes individual transmitter control (2d/DI/SI) by the user, including Transmitter On/Off, frequency control, (and CHIRP On/Off in latest ONIX software)  ...

So most HB xducers can be used with ONIX as long as the user knows what piezoes are in a certain xducer, and what frequency capabilities that xducer can operate at  ...

Even MEGA xducers could be used with ONIX (with certain caveats that we could discuss)  ...

QuadrBeam xducers would not be compatible because the ONIX platform does not have processing capability for the piezoes creating the oval shaped 455kHz angled beams  ... it could fire the transmitters but I doubt it would know how to render that data into a discernible image  ...

Some HB xducers would need an adapter cable (like the AD 1429)  ...

Sorry to ask on this posting but what do yo mean ''with certain caveats that we could discuss ''.
i use onix with box sm3000 onix si transducer + solix with his own MSI ducer .

The most important caveat would be possible damage to a 2d HW piezo if the ONIX were set to transmit 83kHz  ...

Humminbird says this can damage the 2d piezo  ...

So a problem using the 2D from helix ducer only i see , no problem for me it seems with onix Si ducer .
Swann , i would get an MSI ducer from Gen 1 solix for the onix .
If you do not take the onix i might be interested .
