Title: 998 C HD SI--GPS Slow to acclimate
Post by: Bombercraw on July 01, 2013, 05:00:07 PM
I was out on the lake this weekend trying out my new 998C HD SI and had marked a few way points on places where I would later circle back around to fish.  I noticed that the GPS was having a hard time staying acclimated which made it extremely hard to stay in position to the way point in order to fish the exact spot.  The screen kept flipping around as if it was confused as to which direction the boat was heading.  Is there any way to fix this?  Is this a setting problem?  It was extremely difficult to remain on point with this happening. Any ideas or suggestions?

thanks

Depending on how you have your settings, the chart orientation will be shown on screen as 'North Up' or 'Course up'.  It sounds like you may have it set to Course up, which will make it so whatever direction you are pointed is at the top of your screen.  I find it can be useful for navigating at a bit higher speeds, but if you are at rest, drifting, or trolling around, your course will change constantly and your screen will rotate like crazy.  Switch to North up in these circumstances and your chart will remain fixed with North always at the top of your screen.

What speed was the boat moving when the screen would flip?
If at slow speeds, you should use the North-up setting as Adam suggested as the unit has a hard time determining the course of the boat at slow speeds.  Purchasing the AS-GPS-HS GPS Receiver with Heading Sensor would eliminate this issue at slow boat speeds.

Thanks for the info Adam and Greg.  I will try the "north up" suggestion.  Greg, to answer your question regarding boat speed when the chart was flipping, it was when I was setting still and using the trolling motor trying to stay on spot, so boat speed was extremely low i.e., less than 1 mph under trolling motor power.  Greg, can you advise what the estimated cost is of the unit you are suggesting that would eliminate this problem?

thanks

That's MSRP...

It can be found cheaper...

I can attest to it being worth the money...
