Nav card for a 981c Out of luck right?
« on: January 05, 2013, 03:04:33 PM »
I think its here but brain is worn slam out.
Have a 981c came with a navionics mmc/sd
card g904 - us ne & canyons. Called Nav they
dont even know what am asking. Couldnt even
look it up to see if is one newer. Have all the numbers
on the box and card but cant find what it was or anything
to do with a 981c. Humminbird same but do say nope cant
buy a newer card for my area or any area. Only update
firmware on site. That I found. Am sure its simple but this
has got my brain fried. Could at one time buy a card for
say East, north carolina, etc, lakes? Its just sol kinda thing
for it now right? Have antenna and everything else but is
it worth adding the antenna? Say if ur in gaston/kerr lake,
falls lake, jordan lake..NC what would ya see? A little boat
going some where on a screen and thats all? Am so mixed
up dont know why about this. Need advice bad before mount
this and a antenna. Just keep going back to fish finding only.
I guess am real messed up in the brain since I saw a few screen
shots of a 981c split screen with a nice looking detailed lake
with tha little boat. Or maybe it wont a 981 as told on pictures.

Hi,

As an owner of a 981 I know this unit can't show maps/charts at all. Models which can all have two card slots, one for snapshots/recording etc and one for charts. The 981 has only one card slot for snapshots/recording.

I got this one for 120 usd on ebay it had everything
but transducer. Mint condition but cost 190 usd
for a transducer. Not mounted it yet. All have seen
are screen shoots. Are the images as good as what
can find on the web? What have seen the 981c has
excellent pictures, very detailed. This one is new not
been installed. thats why got so mixed up I guess its
new in the box. Old but thought could still find some

Yes,
I live and scan in Sweden. I mostly use my unit in freshwater and I must say it works extremely well here. I have used my unit for about five years and although I spend a lot of time with scanning and various add-on projects I don't think the benefits with a new model justifies the cost for it. The 981 can't operate at 800 kHz and it can't show charts, plus you need an external GPS in case you want to make meaningful recordings. The sonar capacity is as high as in the latest models. It's possible to get extremely good images, as good as the best shown on the net, but you will need some experience to reach that level. I think you made a very nice deal!

When you buy a transducer, choose the orginal XHS 9 SI 160 T. Don't buy the cheaper and smaller 'compact' XNT 9 SI 180 T because it has wider beams and therefore worse sidescan performance.

Regards,
Rickard

Understand 100% now. I see you have some nice fresh water
to fish there. Checked it out in google earth. As far as fresh
water here theres 2 man made lakes local, a couple of rivers
and thats about all. Theres a lot of stumps, trash I call it in
both local lakes and I nice river called the cape fear. Looks
with this unit can kinda pick them out. Did get the 160 t
transducer it cost more than the unit. Still surprised got it
so cheap. He used it about 2 months put it in the box and
bought a 10" something, not sure what brand. Do have a
lowrance 5m gold brand new almost half price with nav card
for around here guess thats good enough for gps. Thanks
Much Rickard!!! 100% understand now..Thanks Much!!!!!!

Got me thinking. What type of gps unit
do you use in Sweden? What kind of
nav card do you use?

No problem, feel free to ask any questions you like. I will gladly help if I can.
We use the same type of GPS units as those used in the US (and in the rest of the world for that matter). I still use a Garmin 176c with the older Buechart nav cards. This GPS is quite old, but it works well with the 981. If a GPS can use the WAAS (in Europe we have EGNOS) differential correction it's as good as any of the later GPS units - and much cheaper! The recent GPS units can update position at a higher frequency and can track more than 12 satellites, but these features have limited value to us. There are rarely more than 12 satellites in view at the same time so the capacity to track 50 satellites is impressive, but still quite useless. You will need a Garmin-to-Humminbird cable too that probably is more expensive than a used Garmin 176c, or 172c. The older Bluecharts have not been updated for some years so they should also be cheap.

Thanks..I'm a land surveyor in the states and use gps on land all the time.
Not sure why but water based gps/chartplotters cant seem to stop brain
farts if makes sense. Thats another thing didnt know but should have.
If am wrong please correct my thinking. As far as us guys on a boat in
any country its kinda the same is it? Rickard's finder/gps more or less
same as a guy in the usa , east coast, north carolina. Finding the same
here so far on the water. In this area dont seem to make any difference
how up to date your unit, antenna is seems at best around 6 for water.
I guess its the area. 176c? Have 2 sets of the garmin 180. 2 displays with
all needed with a new antenna. Have no clue if's any good now. Let me know.
Rickard am sorry but the 176c. Is that top notch? The 180's I got for 20 usd.
Like to talk with ya more ok? Nice to meet a friend. Ur 176 thinks out of date.
What kinda boat ya useing? Please email me ok?
