The first thing I would change is your power source.
   Try a battery with 12.5volts to 13.4volts.
I think your in the area that the 998 will automatically shut down because of low power.
That may not be the problem, but it's a good place to start.

The specs say 10-20 volts.... but maybe they're wrong.

I've been also getting the PC Connect screen occassionally ...(on the 6.600 version)..

I have found that once the unit boots into "Normal"...do not press ANY buttons for 15-20 seconds and the unit does fine...

zwhits, it is not just the voltage that is available for the unit but also the amount of current.  If you are only getting 11.7 volts to the unit than you may not be getting the current that it needs to continue to operate correctly either.

Curious: where did you get the 11.7 volt measurement from?

I would have the battery load tested and if it checks good I would start checking electrical connections or just run new wiring for the 998c HD Si unit.

I would let the unit start up and sit for at least 60 seconds before pressing any buttons, but then I am precautious sort of guy…

11.7 is what the graph says when it starts up and boots right. One of the sonar data boxes is set to voltage. So sitting in the garage listening to the radio and playing with the graph. With everything of volt meter on the batter is 12.5v. Seems like a bad concept to make it that sensitive.... when your on the water things happen and voltage may get low. I'd like the graph to be able to function in that 11+ volt range.

It's kind of a catch 22 thing..... The unit needs a certain amount of power to operate.... as Greg said BOTH voltage and current. The problem is that as voltage drops the current must go up.....

However as current goes up the voltage drops due to the resistance of the wire, this is aggravated by the 6 ft length of 18AWG wire HB supplies for their power cable.

I had the same "PC Connect" thing occur when I fired up my new unit.  This can't be caused by a current limitation, this unit just draw that much, it uses a 3 amp fuse.  The voltage I read on the HB setup screen is 11.4 volts which, according to the instructions, is in the middle of the voltage range required to operate the unit.
As was suggested, I give the unit a minute or two at start up and then hit Exit.  That seems to solve the problem.... for now.
