Title: "True" Down image
Post by: Double Digit on May 01, 2012, 03:58:15 PM
I'm just curious as to why Humminbird has not developed a transducer that has a dedicated down looking crystal as well as side looking  crystals so our units can have "true"down image capability?I know if they came out with one I would dish out a few hundred bucks right now...Just seems like a no brainer to me ::)..Any thoughts??

Humminbird doesn't want to sacrifice the quality of their side imaging by putting a dedicated DI crystal in the transducer like Lowrance did.

The side imaging range and beam angle on the Humminbirds are much better than the LSS-1 and the LSS-2.  The reason for this is that the DI crystal causes interference in the SI beam and a lot of special filtering has to be done to SI data and this results in loss of quality in the SI.

If DI is REALLY important to you, Humminbird has the option of several DI models.  (The Humminbird DI models also have 2D sonar which Lowrance doesn't have on their DI units.)

I did quite a bit of research on this a while back and the above info is what I found.

Look at the following post by DrDepth where he used tape on the LSS-1 transducer to prove the problem with Lowrance SI.
