New 898 will not power up now
« on: May 12, 2011, 12:43:48 AM »
Soon after I was able to mount my SI transducer (with the help of a few fine folks here on the forum), I connected all cables and went through a power up. All things went fine as I was able to get it into Simulator mode and then normal mode. I then decided to upgrade the software to the 5.410 (had 5.210) via SD card. I reset the defaults then powered down, installed the card with the new software on it and then went to power up and......notta. No lights flickered and the screen stayed black as if I had never touched the power button. Checked the battery and my DMM read 12.5. I don't think it's the battery but I will try a different one and re-check all connections tomorrow.

Questions: Could this be a more serious problem with the unit itself? Could the software update cause this? Would the bootstrap sequence solve this power up problem?

Any help would be great!!

Thanks in advance to all...

Helge23,
Since the unit did not power on when you installed the SD card to update the software; the new software never got a chance to load.  I would check the voltage at the power cable and if it is good than I think the unit itself may have failed.  Just for giggles and grins though I would take the SD card out of the unit and try it again.

I did some troubleshooting before work today and found a bad fuse holder that was dropping the voltage to the unit. I replaced the fuse holder and it powered up just fine. Whew!! that was a relief. I was able to upload the new software without any problems. I hope to get on the water to test it out in the next few days and see of the transducer location needs adjustment.

Boats and electrical connections don’t mix that well.  This is why I recommend soldering all connections, using the blade type fuses and fuse holder and sealing all connections.
