Title: Helix 9 G3N - Not displaying accurate depth and SI/DI/2D lock up????
Post by: d1 on June 20, 2021, 06:11:15 PM
The Helix 9 G3N Mega+ SI has been a reliable unit up until yesterday.  After powering on the unit, it will reflect the correct depth and the sonar views are working correctly.  This lasts roughly 15 seconds and then the depth goes to 900+ feet (in a 30 foot lake) and the sonar views lock up.

I have powered it off and on several times and Restored Defaults, but this has not corrected the issue.

The most current software was updated weeks ago.

What can be done to get this unit working correctly???

*Disconnect the cable collector  ...
*Dis-assemble the cable collector  ...
*Plug the cables directly into the respective sockets in the back of the head unit  ...

If the issue is gone - it’s a connection issue  ...
If the issue remains - its a transducer issue or head unit issue  ...

Report back with your findings  ...

Ok, was able to get out this weekend.
Turns out the 105ah AGM House Battery (fully charged the battery reads over 14.6 volts) I have been using to power 4 graphs cannot support the amps required.
The only difference from last year is I changed out the bow graph from a 859 to a 1198.  That put it over the edge.

I can run 3 graphs and not have the performance issues that I was having with the Helix 9 G3N.
As soon as I power up the 4th graph (an Helix 8 G3N), the Helix 9 G3N acts up, but the other 2 graphs work perfect.
The voltage reads 11.9 -12.1 volts regardless if I have 3 or 4 graphs powered on.

So, it looks like I will wire one of the graphs to the Cranking battery to help offset this issue. But I was hoping to not have to contend with the graph shutting off when starting the main outboard.

I had a situation where my Helix G2N was wired initially through my boat breaker panel and it would always shut down when I started my boat, so I wired it directly to the battery and it stopped shutting down..Until I swapped out my larger AGM deep cycle battery from the starter and replaced it with one a little smaller, but it only shut down when the smaller AGM was lower on charge. When it was connected through the boat breakers it always shut down on boat start regardless of the size and charge of the larger battery.

Ok, still having issues, new observation discovered.  So, everything works good when all 4 graphs powered on. Since I have a network hub, I can switch the Helix 8 to read DI or SI view, when I do this, it makes the Helix 9 G3N act wonky and not display correctly, erratic depth readings, etc.  I de-selected the DI & SI in the Network settings on the Helix 8 and Restored Defaults on the Helix 9 G3N and no issues the rest of the day.  Any ideas?  Can bad power to the Ethernet hub cause this?

Ethernet hubs have been known to go bad  ...

Call HB and explain your scenario  ... they may request you send the AS ETH 5XPG for repair  ...
