Title: How do I know when in-hull transducer is on?
Post by: fishesman on April 23, 2013, 11:58:34 PM: I just installed a 998C SI on my 23' deep V center console. I also installed the Y cable and an in-hull puck transducer thinking I'd get better depth readings while on plane with this configuration. From what I've read, the 998C automatically switches to the in-hull transducer, but I don't understand what triggers it to switch from the SI transducer to the in-hull puck and back again? Also, is there a way to force the 998C to turn on the in-hull transducer so that I can test it out? Right now I have no idea when I'm using it and when I'm not. I have temporarily mounted the in-hull transducer inside a piece of pipe that is glued to the hull in the bilge. I filled the pipe with water and weighted the transducer down with a bag of sand. If I get good readings at the current location I'll epoxy it in place.

Post by: rnvinc on April 24, 2013, 09:53:34 AM: The actual configuration of the wire separation in the Y cable eliminates the wires going the 2d pins in the HDSI Xducer cable connector....

And directly configures the wires in the "other leg" of the Y cable to the in hull Xducer ...

So, in effect, the Y cable is physically disconnecting the 2d wires to the HDSI Xducer and replacing them with the 2d wires to the in hull Xducer...

If you have the Y cable installed and the unit is showing 2d returns...then it has no choice but to be returns from the in hull Xducer ...because the Y cable physically disconnected the wires going to the 2d crystal in the HDSI Xducer...

Post by: Humminbird_Greg on April 24, 2013, 11:26:22 AM: Nope, that would take a physical switch like the TS3 Transducer Switch, which the unit and AS-Si-DB-Y cable do not have built into them.

Nice way to test an inside-the-hull transducer. Can you post pictures of this for others to see please? Maybe under its own topic? I’ve done this before and recommend it for deep V hulls. T works well enough that a few have forgotten about the epoxy and just keep the tune filled with water…
